Emergency Event Tracking Report

Since 20 October 2024, DTM monitored an escalation in clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across multiple localities in Aj Jazirah state. The Focused Flash Alert provides a numeric breakdown of displacement due to escalations in Aj Jazirah state, from 20 October to 28 November 2024. 

All figures should be understood as preliminary estimates, pending further verification. 

• Reported clashes displaced an estimated 393,337 individuals (78,963 households) between 20 October and 28 November 2024. 
• Individuals were displaced to 46 localities across eight different states. 
• Approximately 42 per cent of IDPs were displaced to localities in Gedaref state.

• Reported clashes displaced an estimated 343,473 individuals (68,801 households) between 20 October and 13 November 2024. 
• Individuals were displaced to 38 localities across seven different states. 
• Approximately (44%) of IDPs were displaced to localities in Gedaref state.
• Among the individuals displaced, an estimated 15,129 IDPs were already displaced prior to the escalation, and therefore experienced secondary displacement.

The Natural Hazard Overview provides a summary of reported incidents of displacement in Sudan due to natural hazards, including fires and floods. DTM Sudan reported on increased displacement due to fires between April and July 2024, and increased displacement due to floods between July and October 2024. 

Between 01 April and 31 October 2024, DTM Sudan reported 140 incidents of sudden displacement due to natural hazard incidents. Information on earlier reported incidents of fire and flood induced displacement is available in the weekly Natural Hazard Displacement Summary reports, available on the DTM Sudan website. 

Highlights   

• DTM reported on 12 incidents of displacement due to fires and 128 incidents of displacement due to heavy rain or floods in 16 different states across Sudan.
• The reported incidents displaced an estimated 192,030 individuals (38,406 households).

• More than half (57%) of IDPs were displaced to localities in Gedaref state, including Al Butanah and Madeinat Al Gedaref localities. 
• Among the individuals displaced, many were already displaced prior to the escalation and therefore experienced secondary displacement.

The Flood Displacement Summary summarizes DTM updates on incidents of flood-induced displacement across Sudan.  

Between 01 June and 04 October 2024, DTM Sudan reported 126 incidents of heavy rains and floods that triggered sudden displacement in Sudan. Rains and floods have displaced an estimated 186,765 individuals (37,353 households) from locations across 15 different states across Sudan.  

This report outlines incidents of flood-induced displacement between 21 September and 04 October 2024. Information on earlier reported incidents is available on the DTM Sudan website. 

Highlights   

• DTM observed three incidents of flood-induced displacement between 21 September and 04 October 2024.   
• These reported incidents triggered the displacement of an estimated 5,930 individuals (1,186 households).   
• Approximately 4,040 structures were either partially damaged or destroyed by the rain and floods.   
• An estimated 43 per cent of individuals displaced due to floods were already displaced due to conflict.

• An estimated 44 per cent of individuals displaced due to floods were already displaced due to conflict.

Between 01 June and 13 September 2024, DTM Sudan reported 119 incidents of heavy rain and floods that triggered sudden displacement in Sudan. Rain and floods displaced an estimated 178,460 individuals (35,692 households) from locations across 15 different states in Sudan.

Highlights  

• DTM observed eight incidents of flood-induced displacement between 05 September and 13 September 2024.  
• These reported incidents triggered the displacement of an estimated 5,940 individuals (1,188 households).  
• Approximately 1,349 structures were either destroyed or partially damaged due to rain or floods. 
• An estimated 44 per cent of individuals displaced due to floods were already displaced due to conflict prior to the onset of floods.

Between 01 June and 04 September 2024, DTM Sudan reported 111 incidents of heavy rain and floods that triggered sudden displacement in Sudan. Rain and floods displaced an estimated 172,520 individuals (34,504 households) from locations across 15 different states in Sudan.

• DTM observed 34 incidents of flood-induced displacement between 27 August and 4 September 2024.  
   
• These reported incidents triggered the displacement of an estimated 36,065 individuals (7,213 households).  
   
• Approximately 18,264 structures were either destroyed or partially damaged due to rain or floods. 
   
• An estimated 41 per cent of individuals displaced due to floods were already displaced due to conflict prior to the onset of floods.

Between 01 June and 26 August 2024, DTM Sudan reported 77 incidents of heavy rains and floods that triggered sudden displacement in Sudan. Rains and floods have displaced an estimated 136,455 individuals (27,291 households) from locations across 14 different states across Sudan.

Key Figures

• DTM observed 17 incidents of flood-induced displacement between 13 and 26 August 2024.  
• These reported incidents triggered the displacement of an estimated 18,620 individuals (3,724 households).  
• Approximately 8,932 structures were either partially damaged or destroyed by the rain and floods. 
• An estimated 47 per cent of individuals displaced due to floods were already displaced due to conflict.  

Since 15 December 2023, DTM monitored the eruption of a series of armed clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across localities in Aj Jazirah state. According to DTM field teams, clashes triggered widespread displacement across Aj Jazirah state. As of 18 December 2023, approximately 509,796 individuals were affected by the clashes in Aj Jazirah. Of those, DTM Sudan estimated that approximately 275,796 IDPs, 60 per cent of the total affected individuals, were subjected to first-time displacement, originating from of Medani Al Kurba and Sharg Aj Jazirah localities, Aj Jazirah state. Furthermore, approximately 234,000 IDPs who were originally displaced (primarily from Khartoum) and residing in Aj Jazirah at the time of the conflict were secondarily displaced. The Focused Flash Alert provides a numeric breakdown of population estimates affected by the violence over the course of December 2023.
