The crisis currently affecting the Lake Chad Basin states results from a complex combination of factors, including conflict with Non-State Armed Groups, extreme poverty, underdevelopment and a changing climate, which together have triggered significant displacement of populations. As of 30 November 2018, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria were hosting an estimated 4,539,578 affected individuals made up of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Refugees (both in- and out-of-camp), Returnees (Former IDPs and Returnees from abroad) and Third Country Nationals (TCNs). 81 per cent of the affected population (representing 3,669,298 individuals) were located in Nigeria, while 10 per cent resided in Cameroon (444,761 individuals), 5 per cent in Niger (248,887 individuals) and 4 per cent in Chad (176,632 individuals).

As of 20 October 2018, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria are hosting an estimated 4,512,763 affected individuals made up of internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees (both in- and out-of-camp), returnees (former IDPs and returnees from abroad) and third country nationals (TCNs). 81 per cent of the affected population (representing 3,669,298 individuals) are currently located in Nigeria, while 9 per cent are located in Cameroon (418,409 individuals), 6 per cent in Niger (248,887 individuals) and 4 per cent in Chad (176,169 individuals).

As of 25 July 2018, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria are hosting an estimated 4,328,514 affected individuals made up of internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees (both in‐ and out‐of‐camp), returnees (former IDPs and returnees from abroad) and third country nationals (TCNs). 80% of the affected population (representing 3,468,138 individuals) are currently located in Nigeria, while 10% are located in Cameroon (416,412 individuals), 6% in Niger (248,887 individuals) and 5% in Chad (195,077 individuals).

As of 20 June 2018, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria are hosting an estimated 4,187, 247 affected individuals made up of internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees (both in- and out-of-camp), returnees (former IDPs and returnees from abroad) and third country nationals (TCNs). 79% of the affected population (representing 3,322,297 individuals) are currently located in Nigeria, while 10% are located in Cameroon (417,607 individuals), 6% in Niger (252,305 individuals) and 5% in Chad (195,038 individuals).
