The Horn of Africa and Yemen is one of the busiest and riskiest migration corridors in the world travelled by hundreds of thousands of migrants, the majority of whom travel in an irregular manner, often relying on smugglers to facilitate movement along the Eastern Route. This regional report provides monthly updates on the complex migratory dynamics through Djibouti, Somalia, Yemen and Ethiopia based on diverse data sources and consultations with key informants in the four countries. Moreover, it provides information on the main protection concerns for migrants along the journey, information on spillover effects of the conflict in the Sudan observed at the border with Ethiopia, a specific focus on children and information on the returns from Saudi Arabia to Ethiopia, Somalia and Yemen.

This study is part of IOM Libya’s efforts to gain a better understanding of how specific vulnerabilities influence the experiences of migrant women and men in the country. This assessment compares the issues that migrant men and women experience in Libya and are associated with four key areas: community cohesion, household responsibilities, labour market engagement, and safety and security. The report highlights how cultural norms and social practices may translate into different roles and responsibilities for men and women, which present diverse opportunities and challenges.

Le suivi des urgences a pour but de recueillir des informations sur les mouvements importants et soudains, ainsi que sur des urgences sécuritaires et climatiques. Les informations sont collectées par le biais d’entretiens avec des informateurs clés ou par des observations directes. Ce tableau de bord présente les informations sur les mouvements des personnes survenus dans la période du 1er au 30 avril 2023 dans la province du Lac.

Durant la période d’avril 2023, plusieurs incidents ont été observés dans la province du Lac entrainant un grand nombre de déplacements. Au total, 2 537 ménages (10 445 individus) ont été affectés par des déplacements, soit 33 pour cent de plus comparé au mois de mars. Par ailleurs, la grande partie de ces personnes (68%) était déjà des personnes déplacées avant d’effectuer ces nouveaux déplacements. Ainsi, Il est à indiquer que ces déplacements ont été principalement causés par des attaques armées (45%) et des déplacements préventifs (42%). En effet, 80 pour cent des personnes déplacées se sont réfugiées dans des localités situées dans les mêmes sous-préfectures que leurs lieux de provenance (voir le tableau 1). Les besoins immédiats rapportés par ces derniers ont été les nourritures (33%), les articles non-alimentaires (25%), l’eau (21%) et les abris (21%).

The purpose of the Emergency Tracking Tool (ETT) is to collect information on large and sudden population movements as well as on security and climate emergencies. This dashboard provides information on movements which occurred during the period from 01 to 30 April 2023, in Lac Province. 

During the period of April 2023, a large number of incidents were observed in the Lake province, resulting in an increased number of displacements. A total of 2,537 households (10,445 individuals) have been affected by displacement, which corresponds to an increase of 33 per cent compared to the month of March 2023. Furthermore, most of these persons (68%) were previously displaced before these new displacements. It should be noted that these displacements were mainly caused by armed attacks (45%) and preventive displacement (42%). Indeed, 80 per cent of displaced individuals took refuge in localities situated in the same sub-prefectures as their provenance (see Table 1). The most reported urgent needs were food (33%), non-food items (25%), water (21%) and shelter (21%).

In 2022, there were 95 active DTM operations. This largescale data collection initiative follows a central tenet that data collection should serve the data needs of actors on the ground. While all DTM data collection exercises follow a standard methodological framework, approaches must be tailored to to ensure relevance across the range of populations, crises, cultures, political contexts, and response capacities in the locations where DTM works. In support of this adaptable approach, an annual survey is conducted at the end of each year to capture and document specific information about each active DTM operation. Data from this survey form the basis of this report, and further detailed findings can be explored through the accompanying interactive dashboard.

Після 24 лютого 2022 року повномасштабне вторгнення Російської Федерації (РФ) в Україну спричинило безпрецедентну гуманітарну кризу по всій країні. У період з 11 травня по 14 червня 2023 року Міжнародна організація з міграції (МОМ) у два етапи провела раунд 13 репрезентативного оцінювання загального населення України для збору інформації стосовно переміщення, потоків мобільності, намірів та умов для інформаційного забезпечення цільової допомоги населенню, що постраждало від війни. Починаючи з раунду 13, методологію опитування було адаптовано для отримання репрезентативних квартальних даних на рівні областей. Крім того, у цьому раунді запроваджено новий блок питань щодо довгострокових рішень проблеми внутрішнього переміщення згідно з критеріями, пропонованими Рамковою програмою Міжвідомчого постійного комітету щодо довгострокових рішень для ВПО. Опитування загального населення має на меті сприяти ухваленню поінформованих рішень у стратегічному, технічному та програмному аспектах діяльності з реагування та відновлення в Україні, у тому числі Урядом України. Географічне охоплення цього оцінювання покриває всю територію України, за винятком Автономної Республіки Крим та територій Донецької, Луганської, Херсонської та Запорізької областей, які перебувають під тимчасовим військовим контролем РФ. Опитування загального населення було проведено шляхом набору випадкових телефонних номерів, завдяки чому було анонімно опитано 5 297 унікальних респондентів віком від 18 років із використанням методу автоматизованого телефонного опитування (CATI). Оцінки базуються на даних про населення Фонду ООН у галузі народонаселення (останні доступні дані станом на 14 листопада 2022 р.), які гуманітарна спільнота розглядає як базове значення для чисельності населення в Україні. Особи, які наразі перебувають за межами України, під опитування не потрапили.

Дані, зібрані для раунду 25 базового територіального оцінювання, відображають актуальні цифри місцевого адміністративного реєстру ВПО станом на 30 червня 2023 року, що складає 3 650 338 зареєстрованих ВПО. Дані щодо кількості зареєстрованих ВПО було зібрано для 1039 громад (78% усіх охоплених громад на підконтрольних українському уряду територіях). Дані з розподілом за віком, статтю та статусом особи з інвалідністю було надано для приблизно 76% охоплених адміністративно-територіальних одиниць.

From 15 April 2023, armed clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in multiple cities across Sudan, including Khartoum, Al Fasher, Kebkabiya, Merowe, Nyala, Zalingi, Ag Geneina, and El Obeid. DTM Sudan has been receiving reports of widespread displacement across different states in Sudan due to the ongoing security situation. 

• DTM Sudan estimates that, since 15 April 2023, approximately 2,686,434 individuals (537,969 households) have been displaced internally as a result of the conflict. Notably, the current estimate for displacement in the previous 101 days is greater than that of recorded displacement during the previous four years.
• Furthermore, an estimated additional 844,574 individuals have crossed into neighbouring countries.

Due to the ongoing nature of the fighting, many areas reportedly remain inaccessible to field teams. DTM estimates of displacement are based on preliminary reports from field teams and should be taken as estimations only. 

The IDP caseload has sought shelter in locations across all of Sudan’s 18 states. IDPs have been originally displaced from eight states, including Khartoum, West Darfur, South Darfur, North Darfur, Central Darfur, North Kordofan, South Kordofan, and Aj Jazirah.

Disclaimer: DTM Sudan notes that military clashes remain continuous in many areas across Sudan in particular in Khartoum and the Darfur region – limiting humanitarian access. Additionally, field teams have reported severe telecommunication and connectivity issues, as well as escalating economic pressures which have impacted the capacity for domestic travel. As such, DTM is currently conducting remote interviews with key informants across its network and is currently unable to engage in the additional verification of these figures. Data on flows into neighbouring countries is based on available information from DTM flow monitoring networks and secondary sources.
