Armed conflict erupted on 18 March 2021, between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters. The firefighting and mortar shelling displaced thousands of families from 12 municipalities in Maguindanao and 1 municipality in North Cotabato, including indigenous people of the Teduray and Maguindanaon groups
