The Quarterly report on the migration situation in Kazakhstan for the second quarter of 2023 reveals several key trends. During this period, a significant number of visas were issued to nationals from China and Türkiye, indicating their predominance among foreign visa recipients in Kazakhstan. Migrant workers in Kazakhstan are predominantly from Uzbekistan and the Russian Federation, along with other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) nations. Among non-CIS countries, Chinese citizens are the most numerous in the migration flows for this quarter. This trend is likely to persist throughout 2023, particularly following the agreement between Kazakhstan and China regarding the exemption of visa requirements. Additionally, there has been a noticeable decrease in the volume of remittance inflows and outflows in April-June 2023 when compared to the same quarter in 2022. Despite this overall decline, the Russian Federation remains the primary source of remittances sent to Kazakhstan, continuing its leading role from the previous year.

  • Biometric Registration

Registration provides a more in-depth analysis of specific needs by capturing bio data using the DTM-developed Biometric Registration and Verification Application (B.R.a.Ve) system, which accurately registers IDPs. It provides further information on the individuals, households, vulnerability, and displacement-related triggers for programming and response over time.

As part of the commitment to provide verified figures of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Benue State in line with the government’s plans, IOM DTM, in partnership with UNHCR, Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Nigeria Red Cross Society (NRCS), National Commission for Refugee, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Community Links and the Foundation for Justice Development and Peace (FJDP) launched the biometric registration in Benue State on 22 August 2023.

Six LGAs have been mapped as locations with IDPs in Benue State based on DTM Round 11 (March 2023). So far, the biometrically registered IDPs have covered the location of Makurdi LGA (5 camps and two host community sites), Guma LGA (2 camps and two host community sites) and currently ongoing in Logo LGA (1 camp, one host community site and another camp/site). The registration has shown that Guma LGA has the highest number of IDPs, with 23,280 individuals (6,749 HHs), followed by Makurdi with 13,578 individuals (4,020 HHs). The registration is ongoing in Logo LGA, with 10,105 registered individuals (2,433 HHs).

Moreover, 6,153 individuals with vulnerabilities (serious medical illness) have been referred to MSF for further support. All registered IDPs have received a PVC card with a unique number for easy identification. The registration exercise is expected to be completed by December 2023.
The observed challenges include rain disruption, security concerns, access issues, poor networks, and accommodation challenges for the field team in the deep location.

The GRANIT was conceived in 2021 in Dakar at the initiative of OCHA, IOM and REACH with the support of the Regional Sectoral Groups, UN agencies and NGOs. GRANIT seeks to create a forum of technical experts and information managers to pave the way for a regional, holistic and cross-sectoral analytical approach to inform the crisis preparedness and response phases. The aim of the monitoring tool is to track developments in the context in the target countries, using a multi-hazard approach. To this end, 15 indicators have been selected by the regional group of experts in emergency preparedness and response and GRANIT members. This report presents the evolution of the situation in Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Togo, as of 30 September 2023.

In Central America, North America and the Caribbean, the effects of natural disasters, climate change, violence, and insecurity drive internal displacement as people move to seek safety within their own countries. However, the lack of information on internal displacement in some areas of the region limits visibility on the magnitude of this phenomenon and the ability to address its effects. There is a substantial need for official IDP statistics and operational data in the region, including the necessary infrastructure to collect and maintain such data.

DTM activities focused on identifying and tracking internal displacement in Central America, North America and the Caribbean are currently being conducted in Haiti and Honduras. Both countries face a complex internal displacement context shaped by violence and natural disasters. The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the information available on internal displacement in Haiti and Honduras obtained through data collection activities conducted between August 2022 and October 2023. It will also highlight capacity building efforts to strengthen existing data collection systems and to expand data collection on IDPs into other countries of the region.

Within the West and Central Africa (WCA) region, the Sahel stretches from Mauritania to Chad, separating the Sahara desert on the North, from tropical coastal countries to the South. Overall, within the African continent, it spans from the Atlantic Ocean on the West to the Red Sea on the East, separating the desert from the savanna. Migratory routes within the WCA region inevitably cross the Sahel and - throughout their journeys - migrants are facing multiple risks along these routes.

This report compiles information from different data and research activities held within the region in the objective to highlight the diverse dynamics, profiles and risks migrants are facing while travelling on the WCA routes through the Sahel. This dashboard covers the period until September 2023 and is based on information from (1) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) data on mobility trends and population flows; (2) Missing Migrants Project (MMP) data on arrivals to Europe and the Canary Islands, migrant deaths and disappearances; (3) Data on migrants seeking Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) to and within the WCA region; (4) Expulsions of migrants from other regions to WCA, especially from Algeria and Libya; (5) Transhumance Tracking Tool (TTT) data on the mobility of transhumant populations throughout the Sahel; and (6) Solutions and Mobility Index (SMI) indicators of stability within the Sahelian region.

In September 2023, a total of 37,742 movements were observed across the six flow monitoring points (FMPs) in Ethiopia. This represents a 6% increase in daily average movements in comparison with August 2023 when an average of 1,187 movements per day were observed.

Outgoing movements (71.8%) during September increased while incoming movements (28.2%) decreased compared to the previous month, mainly due to decreased incoming flows from neighboring Sudan through the Metema and Kurmuk entry points. A total of 27,108 outgoing movements were observed, of which 11,204 (41.3%) were heading to Saudi Arabia, 5,489 (20.2%) were going to Kenya, 3,631 (13.4%) were travelling towards Somalia, 3,023 (11.2%) to Djibouti, 1,173 (4.3%) intending to reach Yemen, 976 (3.6%) heading to Sudan, and 878 (3.2%) to South Africa, while remaining movements were travelling to other southern African, Middle Eastern, European and North American countries.

At the same time, 10,634 incoming movements were observed, of which 4,528 (42.6%) originated from Sudan, mainly fleeing the conflict that started in April, while 2,145 (20.2%) came from Somalia, 1,990 (18.7%) from Kenya, 1,783 (16.8%) from Djibouti, and the remaining from Yemen, Uganda, South Sudan and Burundi.
