Since October 8 there has been an increase in cross-border incidents between Israel and Lebanon, resulting in the displacement of people both within the South and elsewhere within the country. Since October 10, the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has been conducting the daily monitoring of population movements. The objective of the exercise is to inform preparedness and response planning.

On 26th October 2024, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted a rapid intention survey through its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in collaboration with ACTED, the camp management organization. This survey was conducted in Renk TC and its surrounding areas. The primary objective was to monitor population dynamics and displacement patterns within the center. The insights gained from this survey are intended to enhance humanitarian responses and optimize Onward Transportation Assistance (OTA) operations. According to the headcount conducted by ACTED on October 24, 2024, the TC hosts 13,227 individuals (11,743 South Sudanese returnees and 1,484 individuals of other nationalities).

In August 2024, a total of 37,995 movements were observed across the six flow monitoring points (FMPs) in Ethiopia. This represents an 11% decrease in daily average movements in comparison with July 2024 when an average of 1,377 movements per day were observed.

The ratio between outgoing movements (68.3% or 25,961 individuals) during August and incoming movements (31.7% or 12,034 individuals) shows a higher share of outgoing movements compared to the month of July. Historically, recorded outflows have been higher than inflows as seen in the figure below.

In September 2024, Transhumance Flow Monitoring tool identified 120 herders in Kaduna State and 182 herders in Katsina State. The animal count was estimated at 519 for Kaduna State and 1,328 for Katsina State. Notably, 85 per cent of the total number of herders departed from states within Nigeria, while the remaining 15 per cent departed from Niger.

An estimated 910,000 people have crossed into Chad since the onset of the crisis in Sudan, of which 222,743 are Chadian returnees as of end of September 2024. IOM expects this number to rise to 240,000 through to December 2024 due to ongoing conflict and food insecurity in Darfur. IOM and CNARR monitor daily arrivals of returnees from Sudan passing through the Adré border crossing to collect basic demographic data and provide an estimate of daily displacement flows. The data provides an overview of trends and the volume of flows of returnees but is for information only and has some limitations.

The International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in collaboration with the Protection, and Shelter and Settlement units visited Raja Town in September 2024 to conduct registration of its returnee population in order to enable access to humanitarian assistance and respond to the immediate shelter needs of the returning local communities. In September 2024, IOM registered 2,742 individuals (1,401 households) from the returnee population. Almost half of the registered population was found to be individuals between 18 and 59 years of age (49%). Women aged 18 to 59 make up 32 per cent of the population, while women and girls together constitute 57 per cent of the overall registered population. The Shelter and Settlement unit provided multipurpose cash assistance to all the 1,401 targeted returnee households (2,742 individuals). The majority of households who returned to their area of origin after more than four years of displacement found their shelters damaged.

This report, based on a questionnaire administered through KoBo, provides insights into the profiles, experiences, needs, routes travelled and intentions of migrants transiting through Montenegro. Data was collected from 1 July to 30 September 2024. IOM surveyed 245 migrants at the Reception Center Božaj, and active transit locations such as bus stops or at key entry and exit locations (Rožaje and Pljevlja) throughout the country.

On 19th October 2024, IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in collaboration with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), Danish Refugee Council (DRC), and Humanitarian and Development Consortium (HDC) conducted a rapid intention survey at Malakal TC aimed to track population dynamics and displacement patterns in the center, to better inform humanitarian response and improve OTA operations. According to the headcount conducted, the TC hosts 1,684 individuals (1,632 South Sudanese returnees and 52 Sudanese nationals), showing a decrease of 210 individuals compared to August 2024.
