The full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation in February 2022 has triggered mass displacement and a humanitarian crisis, heightening the population’s vulnerability to protection risks, including trafficking in persons, particularly among displaced and conflict-affected communities. Despite comprehensive responses aimed at mitigating an expected surge in trafficking, significant risks persist as coping strategies are increasingly strained. Anti-trafficking actors across Ukraine have been vocal about the risks of trafficking, based on pre-existing trafficking trends within the country and region, knowledge of trafficking in emergencies from previous crises, and the specificities of this crisis.

This report examines protection risks related to the war in Ukraine, focusing on labour exploitation, travel-related deception, and the awareness and accessibility of support systems. Utilizing data from the IOM General Population Survey, the report aims to support evidence-based programming, policy-making, advocacy, and further research.

This assessment of suicidal behavior (suicides, suicide planning and attempts) among Internally Displaced Per-sons (IDPs) in the Metropolitan Area of Port-au-Prince (ZMPAP) aims at highlighting the link between the migratory situation of Haitians and suicide risk. This risk is part of a complex context, with a charged history and a strong and anchored culture that must be taken into account when designing suicide prevention interventions.

With the aim of contributing to the collective effort necessary to reduce the risk of suicide among IDPs of the ZMPAP, this assessment suggests intervention methods structured around three specific axes:
➔ Strengthening the capacities and technical skills of state services in the areas of mental health and suicide prevention;
➔ Strengthening the psychosocial well-being of internally displaced people in Port-Au-Prince;
➔ Improving specialized mental health care and reducing suicide risk

Irregular migration is a complex, dynamic and fragmented phenomenon, and remains difficult to fully picture. Strengthening the understanding of migration routes, trends as well as migrant profiles is critical to protect migrants and support evidence-based policies. The International Organization for Migration's Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) and Missing Migrants Project (MMP) collect data on the departures, arrivals, deaths and disappearances of migrants along migratory routes.

This document presents the resumption of migration from the coasts of West Africa to the Canary Islands (Spain). This route, already active in 2006, saw an increasing number of movements in 2023, and in the first months of 2024 there were considerable increases compared to the previous year. The risks, deaths and disappearances following shipwrecks are also on the rise along the Atlantic coasts. Between January and March 2024, 13,115 migrants reached the Canary Islands irregularly after crossing by boat from the coasts of West Africa, an increase of 502 per cent compared to 2023 (2,178 migrants).

As of December 2023, the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in the East and Horn of Africa was active in seven countries (Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda), and its methodology includes four main components (mobility tracking, flow monitoring, registrations and surveys).

Mobility tracking activities were conducted in Burundi (with periodic internal displacement and emergency monitoring dashboards), Ethiopia, (Round 17 of the national displacement report), Kenya (with assessments in Garissa, Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu and Turkana), Somalia (2023 baseline assessment), South Sudan (Round 14) and Uganda (monthly multi-hazard response infographics nationwide).

Flow monitoring was operational in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia (suspended in March and April), South Sudan (no longer active since
October) and Uganda (only active in January and February), through a network of 61 flow monitoring points (FMPs), with the main aim of tracking cross-border movement trends in the region and beyond. FMPs established at key areas of high mobility monitor different kinds of movements, including movements along the four main migration routes (Eastern, Horn of Africa, Southern and Northern) and other migration networks in the region such as in South Sudan and Uganda.

Since 01 April 2024, DTM monitored numerous clashes across Al Fasher and other localities in North Darfur state. According to DTM field teams, clashes triggered widespread displacement across North Darfur state. As of 31 May 2024, approximately 129,825 individuals (approximately 25,965 households) were displaced in Al Fasher locality due to the numerous clashes since 01 April 2024.

The Focused Flash Alert provides a numeric breakdown of population estimates affected by the recent escalations from 01 April -31 May 2024. All figures should be understood as preliminary estimates, pending further verification.

DTM Sudan releases Early Warning Flash Alerts to provide immediate updates on specific incidents or armed clashes that spurred displacement.  Early Warning Flash Alerts are distributed via the DTM Sudan mailing list. For more information, see Focused Flash Alert North Darfur (Update 001)

Following the increase in localized displacement due to fires, DTM Sudan released the following report summarizing DTM updates on displacement due to fire incidents across Sudan, from 08 May to 21 May 2024.

DTM field teams reported five fire incidents across North Darfur (1), North Kordofan (2), White Nile (1), and Northern (1) states. Some fires were reportedly caused by increased temperatures and drier climate conditions, while others were due to household accidents.

Highlights

  • Fires displaced an estimated 575 individuals (approximately 115 households) between 08 May and 21 May 2024.
  • Over 133 structures (126 houses and seven farms) were destroyed or partially damaged by the fires.
  • The fires resulted in localized displacement: the majority of displaced households sought shelter with host communities within the same locations.

Within the West and Central Africa (WCA) region, the Sahel stretches from Mauritania to Chad, separating the Sahara desert on the North, from tropical coastal countries to the South. Overall, within the African continent, it spans from the Atlantic Ocean on the West to the Red Sea on the East, separating the desert from the savanna. Migratory routes within the WCA region inevitably cross the Sahel and - throughout their journeys - migrants are facing multiple risks along these routes.

This report compiles information from different data and research activities held within the region in the objective to highlight the diverse dynamics, profiles and risks migrants are facing while travelling on the WCA routes through the Sahel. This dashboard covers the period between January and March 2024 and is based on information from (1) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) data on mobility trends and population flows; (2) Missing Migrants Project (MMP) data on arrivals to Europe and the Canary Islands, migrant deaths and disappearances; (3) Data on migrants seeking Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) to and within the WCA region; (4) Expulsions of migrants from other regions to WCA, especially from Algeria and Libya; (5) Transhumance Tracking Tool (TTT) data on the mobility of transhumant populations throughout the Sahel; and (6) Solutions and Mobility Index (SMI) indicators of stability within the Sahelian region.

Conflicts between farmers and herders in North-East Nigeria and other Sahel regions are rooted in many factors such as desertification, climate change impacts, low rainfall, and competition over suitable land for farming and transhumance activities. These issues are exacerbated by rapid population growth, which drives demand for food, shelter, and security for both humans and livestock. Consequently, competition for scarce natural resources intensifies, leading to incidents like farming on cattle routes, crop destruction, farm damage, and water pollution among others, which often escalate into violent confrontations between the farmer and herder communities.

The Transhumance Tracking Tool (TTT) as a component of the IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), with the support of community key informants, operationalized the Early Warning System in the selected 9 Local Government Area (LGA) in the adjoining states of Adamawa and Taraba to collect alerts that are related to farmer-herder conflicts.

Of the 288 alerts recorded in April, 260 (90%) are event-related while 28 (10%) are related to movements. Specifically, Demsa, Girei, Lamurde, Numan and Shelleng LGAs in Adamawa state reported solely event-related alerts, while in Guyuk LGA, 89 per cent were event-related and 11 per cent were movement-related. Similarly, Mayo-belwa LGA reported 73 per cent event-related alerts and 27 per cent movement-related. Also in Taraba state, Lau LGA reported 74 per cent of event-related alerts and 26 per cent are movement-related alerts while Zing LGA reported 72 per cent of movement-related alerts and 28 per cent are event-related. Disaggregated ward-level data indicates that Kodompti, Talum and Demsa wards in Numan, Shelleng and Demsa LGAs of Adamawa state reported the highest percentage of events, cumulatively encompassing 20 per cent of the total alerts.

The event alerts reported across all LGAs suggested a population displacement rate of 2 per cent, with 17 per cent of instances of alerts resulting in casualties or injuries.
