Baseline Assessment

The third round of the International Migrant Worker Survey, conducted across seven regions and three provincial cities, interviewed 1,810 international migrant workers. Using the snowball method to secure informed consent, the survey covered demographics, socio-economic profiles, employment status, migration intentions, reasons for migration, challenges faced at work, income, remittances, housing, health services, financial status, rights information, local reintegration, the impact of sanctions, and vulnerabilities. Key findings revealed that 32 per cent of respondents have a lower secondary education, 50 per cent are primary breadwinners, 57 per cent lack pension payments, 50 per cent have no annual leave, 41 per cent work without formal contracts, and 55 per cent pay rent for accommodation. Additionally, 39 per cent are employed in the construction sector, 70 per cent face high rent costs, 26 per cent lack health services, and 48 per cent remit over half their income. 

IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix is a comprehensive system to analyse and disseminate information to better understand the movements and needs of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Burundi. The baseline assessment aims at providing information on the stock (presence) by colline of IDPs which are categorized into two groups: Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) including IDPs who returned to their colline of origin but not their home and returnees who became IDPs. The baseline assessment also collects information on the cause of displacement and the type of shelter hosting IDPs. Data collection is conducted four times per year by trained Burundian Red Cross volunteers operating at all administrative levels: provinces, communes and collines.

La Matrice de Suivi des Déplacements de l’OIM est un système mis en œuvre dans le but de capturer, analyser et disséminer des informations pour mieux comprendre les mouvements et les besoins des personnes déplacées internes (PDI) au Burundi. L'évaluation de base vise à fournir des informations sur la présence des PDI par colline qui sont catégorisés en deux groupes : Personnes déplacées internes (PDI) incluant les PDI retournées dans leur colline d'origine mais pas dans leur maison et les rapatriés devenus PDI. L'évaluation de base recueille également des informations sur la cause du déplacement et le type d'abri accueillant les PDI. La collecte des données est effectuée quatre fois par an par des volontaires formés de la Croix-Rouge du Burundi et opérant à tous les niveaux administratifs : provinces, communes et collines.

Following the armed conflict in Sudan in April 2023, thousands of people were forced to leave the country and take refuge in Chad, mainly in the east. These Chadian nationals, who ahd been living in SUdan for many years, were registered by IOM in 41 displacement sites in the Sila and Ouaddaï provinces. The majority (61%) of the displacement sites are in the Adré sub-prefecture, and make up 55 per cent of the total returnee population in the two provinces. 

The aim of the assessment is to measure the profiles, vulnerabilities and needs of the populatiosn displaced by this crisis, in order to better orient pprogramming of durable solutions for the displaced population.

Data was collected through itnerviews with key informants (local authorities, village chiefs, IDP representatives and site managers) in villages and IDP reception sites, as well as through direct observations in these localities. 

This dashboard preents the results of assessments carried out from 03 Janaury to 08 February 2024, in 41 locations acorss the Ouaddaï and Sila proinces.  

This latest round of Emergency Trends Tracking was initiated in April 2024 to monitor displacements movements during the Gu rainy season. Districts covered in this round include Afgooye, Afmadow, Baardheere, Baidoa, Balcad, Belet Weyne, Dayniile, Gaalkacyo, Garoowe, Hodan, Jamaame, Jowhar, Kahda, Kismaayo, Luuq.

ETT is a crisis-based tool that tracks sudden displacement triggered by specific events or emerging crises. The objective of ETT is to help prioritize humanitarian response and to enable partners to deliver rapid assistance. Based on previous shock induced displacement patterns, the humanitarian community expects that people will continue to move toward urban areas in search of humanitarian services. Consequently, the ETT coverage focuses on the main urban centers and surrounding villages for each assessed district. The data is collected through Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) at the location level, from Sunday to Wednesday every week. It includes information on new arrivals, numbers and demographic of IDPs, reasons for displacement, intentions, humanitarian assistance and priority needs among others.

The ETT tool also adapts to regional contexts: because of the very high number of IDP sites in Khada and Daynile districts in Banadir region and in Baidoa district in Bay region, a zonal approach has been adopted for these areas. Each week, KIIs are first conducted at the zone level to indicate to the field teams which locations have received the most new arrivals and which need to be assessed. To facilitate the joint analysis of the CCCM (Camp Coordination and Camp Management) Cluster’s New Arrivals Tracker (NAT) and ETT data, the assistance and needs indicators are identical in both tools.

Since October 8 there has been an increase in cross-border incidents between Israel and Lebanon, resulting in the displacement of people both within the South and elsewhere within the country. Since October 10, the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has been conducting the daily monitoring of population movements. The objective of the exercise is to inform preparedness and response planning.
