On 7 May 2024, armed bandits attacked Sakajiki community in Kaura Namoda LGA, Zamfara State. The incident led to three fatalities and four injuries, affecting 219 homes and 1,097 individuals. Among the affected were 614 children, 259 women, and 224 men. The displaced population moved to neighboring communities within Kaura Namoda LGA, including Arewa, Shiyar Nafiu, and Sabon gari. The attack resulted in the destruction or severe damage of 40 shelters and the loss of many possessions of households.
 
Of all the needs identified, food and non-food items (NFIs) were the most prevalent. Other needs included security, shelter, and health services.

Following these events, DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field staff conducted rapid assessments to inform the humanitarian community and Government/partners, and to enable a targeted response. 

Nigeria’s north-central and north-west zones are afflicted with a multi-dimensional crisis. Long-standing tensions between ethnic and religious groups often result in attacks and banditry or hirabah. These attacks involve kidnapping and grand larceny along the major highways by criminal groups. During the past years, the crisis has intensified and has resulted in widespread displacements across the north-central and north-western regions.

Between November and December 2023, IOM’s DTM deployed Site Assessment (SA) Round 35 and Village Assessment Survey (VAS) Round 18.

According to data collected through the Site Assessment round 35 November and December 2023, an estimated 3,194,413 IDPs (635,724 IDP households) were internally displaced across 2,662 assessed, accessible sites in Ethiopia. Conflict is the primary cause of displacement and displaced almost 2.2 million IDPs (68.7%), followed by drought which displaced an estimated 536,343 IDPs (16.8%). Somali region hosts the highest number of IDPs primarily displaced by drought nationwide (an estimated 391,573 individuals or 73% of the national drought caseload), while Tigray region hosts the highest number of IDPs primarily displaced by conflict nationwide (an estimated 831,002 individuals or 37.9% of the national conflict caseload).

According to the data collected through the Village Assessment Survey round 18 between November and December 2023, there were an estimated 2,548,685 returning IDPs (586,187 returning IDP households) across 2,580 assessed, accessible villages in Ethiopia. The highest returning IDP caseloads nationwide were in the regions of Tigray (967,257 returning IDPs, 38%), Amhara (an estimated 951,931 returning IDPs, 37.3%) and Afar (an estimated 222,179 returning IDPs, 8.7%).

It is to be noted that South Ethiopia region is not included due to operational constraints. Furthermore, the dataset for Amhara region is available separately, as a multisectoral location assessment was carried out within the region.

Since October 8 there has been an increase in cross-border incidents between Israel and Lebanon, resulting in the displacement of people both within the South and elsewhere within the country. Since October 10, the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has been conducting the daily monitoring of population movements. The objective of the exercise is to inform preparedness and response planning.

This report presents the main findings from the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Flow Monitoring Surveys (FMS) deployed in Greece, Italy, and Spain in 2023. FMS provide a snapshot of the profiles, experiences, and needs of migrants. The survey asks questions on demographics, education and employment backgrounds, the circumstances of the migration journey and migration factors, as well as future intentions and vulnerabilities to abuse, exploitation and violence.

In 2023, a total of 4,020 surveys were collected in 130 entry and transit points for migrants arriving by land and by sea to Europe. The report explores similarities and differences among migrants travelling along the Eastern Mediterranean Route (EMR), the Central Mediterranean Route (CMR), the Western Mediterranean Route (WMR) and the Western African Atlantic Route (WAAR) (3,626 surveys). A separate section also looks at the evidence from migrants interviewed in the North of Italy, entering by land from Slovenia (394), connecting this with analyses carried out in the Western Balkan (WB) region. A final section addresses the conditions and needs of migrant children (14-17 years old) in the sample.

This snapshot on nationals from Pakistan in Europe is part of the outputs of IOM’s EU-funded Displacement Tracking Matrix - Regional Evidence for Migration Analysis and Policy (DTM REMAP) project. The snapshot is divided into three sections:

Firstly, it provides information on the number of Pakistani nationals who arrived by land and sea in Europe and those who transited through the Western Balkan and Eastern Europe region in 2023. The data on arrivals and transits is made available by national authorities and then gathered by the IOM DTM team in Europe.

Secondly, it delves into the demographic distribution of Pakistani nationals residing in Europe, categorized by gender and geographical regions within Europe, utilizing data reported by Eurostat and the UK Office of Statistics.

Lastly, the report encapsulates the insights gained from the Flow Monitoring Survey (FMS) conducted by the DTM Europe team, engaging with 373 Pakistani nationals across seven European countries throughout 2023.

This report presents the results of the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) Flow Monitoring Surveys (FMS) deployed in Italy in 2023. The data were collected from 04 August to 27 December 2023 in three Italian regions (Calabria, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Sicily).

IOM interviewed a total of 1,451 individual respondents. FMS provide a snapshot of the profiles, experiences, and needs of migrants. The survey asks questions on demographics, education and employment backgrounds, the circumstances of the migration journey and migration factors, as well as future intentions and vulnerabilities to abuse, exploitation and violence.

Afin de mieux comprendre les mouvements et tendances migratoires dans un espace géographique donné, l’Organisation Internationale pour
les Migrations (OIM), à travers la Matrice de suivi des déplacements (Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), en anglais), met en oeuvre l’activité de suivi des flux de populations (Flow Monitoring (FM), en anglais). Le suivi des flux est composé de deux outils : l’inventaire des flux (Flow Monitoring Registry (FMR), en anglais) et les enquêtes individuelles (Flow Monitoring Survey (FMS), en anglais). Le suivi des flux a pour objectif de recueillir des données sur le nombre et les caractéristiques des personnes en déplacement dans des zones à forte mobilité, à travers des points (postes) de suivi (Flow Monitoring Points (FMP), en anglais) installés dans ces zones. Cette activité facilite la compréhension des mouvements migratoires et permet de préparer des stratégies et des réponses appropriées dans un contexte migratoire mixte motivé par des facteurs concomitants tels que les conflits et les raisons économiques. Le conflit armé sévissant au Soudan depuis mi-avril 2023, continue d’occasionner le déplacement de milliers de personnes en provenance du Soudan vers la République Centrafricaine (RCA), l’OIM en coordination avec la Commission Nationale pour les Refugies (CNR), poursuit depuis le 9 Février 2024 ses activités de Flow Monitoring Survey (FMS) et le Flow Monitoring Registry (FMR) au niveau du point d’entrée de Am-dafock, situé dans la préfecture de Vakaga à la frontière entre la RCA et le Soudan. Cette activité consiste à inventorier le nombre de personnes entrant de part et d'autre de la frontière, définir leurs profils, motivations, destinations et intentions futures. L’activité est conduite par des partenaires opérationnels de la DTM.
Ce tableau de bord présente des analyses basées sur les informations collectées entre le 09 février au 02 Avril 2024 sur un échantillon des
populations migrantes ayant franchi le point d’entrée d’Am-dafock lors cette période.

La Matrice de suivi des déplacements (Displacement Tracking Matrix, DTM, en anglais) est un outil de l’Organisation internationale pour les migrations (OIM) permettant de faire le suivi des déplacements et des mouvements de populations et d’avoir une meilleure compréhension de leurs besoins ainsi que de leurs profils, intentions et accès aux services. L’objectif de la DTM est de capturer et d’analyser, de manière régulière et à différents niveaux, les données relatives aux flux de populations et de disséminer ces données auprès des autorités et de la communauté humanitaire. Dans ce cadre, la DTM développe et partage divers produits d'information (rapports, analyses, tableaux de bord...) compilant et représentant les données recueillies, de manière à en faciliter la compréhension. Dans le souci de maintenir ses produits d’information en accord avec les besoins de la communauté humanitaire en termes d’analyses, la DTM en République centrafricaine a conduit une enquête en ligne sur l’utilisation et la qualité perçue de ses publications. Vingt partenaires ont donné des réponses à cette enquête. Le présent « Dashboard » en résume l’essentiel.

Forced returns of Haitians to Haiti is one of the main human mobility trends in the country. In search of a better life, many Haitians attempt to leave the country through regular or irregular pathways. In addition to risking their lives, those who engage in irregular pathways are often forcibly returned to Haiti by their destination or transit countries.

In 2023, more than 216,000 people were returned to Haiti by different countries. Many are returned after living several months or years outside Haiti and face challenges reintegrating into their communities. Furthermore, security and socioeconomic conditions in Haiti exacerbate these reintegration challenges. Hence, even after being forcibly returned in the country, many people engage again, sometimes multiple times, in irregular migration, in search of a better life out of Haiti.

This report provides insights on the profiles of Haitians who were forcibly returned in 2023. It presents their socio demographic and economic profiles, their migration experiences and their migration intentions. Information was collected through individual surveys conducted with a sample of returnees. Surveys were conducted upon their arrival in the country (please refer to the last section of the report for more information on methodology).

The goal of this research is to inform the development or adjustment of migration governance policies as well as transition and development strategies to ensure that migration is a choice, rather than the consequence of a constraint, and that once engaged, it is safe and carried out with human dignity, and contributes to the socioeconomic development and well-being of migrants and their community of origin and of destination.
