Return migration

From May 2018 to December 2019, 12,114 Iraqi returnees from abroad were identified in 15 Governorates, 55 Districts and 444 locations. During this reporting period, IOM Iraq achieved full country coverage.

DTM’s Flow Monitoring Registry (FMR) surveys people on the move at key transit points within South Sudan (SSD) and at its borders. It provides an insight into mobility trends, migration drivers and traveller profiles to inform programming by humanitarian and development partners and by the government. In total, 41 Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs) were active in December 2019, surveying internal flows and cross-border travel with Uganda (UGA), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sudan (SDN) and the Central African Republic (CAR). Operations at Lasu and Tokori FMPs (Yei County) remained suspended throughout December as a security precaution, while two FMPs operated in collaboration with DTM Uganda in Panjala and Busia were de-prioritised and ceased operations at the end of December. Figures are only indicative of existing trends among respondents at the active FMPs since DTM does not have full coverage of cross-border or internal flows. Participation in the survey is voluntary and anonymous.

Four FMPs in Central Equatoria State – Bazi, Okaba, Tokori and Lasu – temporarily suspended operations as a security precaution following armed clashes in Isebi, Morobo County, on 27 October which resulted in the death of three IOM aid workers. While Bazi and Okaba resumed operations in November, Tokori and Lasu FMPs were later deactivated. Figures are only indicative of existing trends among respondents at the active FMPs since DTM does not have full coverage of cross-border or internal flows. The international Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and World Vision International (WVI) conducted a biometric registration exercise in Nasir County, Upper Nile between March and June 2019 covering 10 locations. The exercise was conducted in two phases at registration sites along the Sobat River (Jikmir, Makak, Maker, Mandeng) which were accessed via boat from March to April 2019, while registration sites for in-land locations (Garieng, Gum 1, Gum 2 (Meer), Kiechkuon, Mading, Ngueny) were covered from May to June 2019. DTM registered a total of 90,480 individuals (16,014 households) during the exercise. Population categories were disaggregated during the registration to categorize beneficiaries into IDPs, returnees and host community. 

During the reporting period, 719 individuals  returned to Afghanistan, amongst which 124 individuals crossed through Torkham and 595 individuals used the Chaman/Spin Boldak border crossing.The total number of Undocumented Afghans that returned spontaneously to Afghanistan through Torkham and Chaman border crossings since January 2019 now stands at 17,623 (excluding deportations).
