With the onset of the rainy season in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno, varying degrees of damages have been reported in multiple locations in the region. Heavy rainfalls, accompanied by strong winds have caused serious damages to shelters and infrastructures.
On 27 July 2022, the combination of heavy rainfalls with the opening of a dam gate in Cameroon led to the flooding of the Wajare community and a large segment of Banki camp in Buduwa/Bula Chirabe ward of Bama LGA in Borno State. IOM’s DTM programme carried out an assessment to ascertain the level of damage sustained in the affected camp. Over 7,389 individuals from 2,332 households were displaced from the camp to a less affected part of the host communities in Banki.

The DTM Emergency Event Tracking (EET) is deployed to track sudden displacement and population movements, provide more frequent updates on the scale of displacement, and quantify the affected population when needed. As a subcomponent of the new Mobility Tracking methodology in Sudan (Round Four), and activated on a need basis, EET utilises a broad network of key informants to capture best estimates of the affected population presence per location – a useful tool for humanitarian response planning and design.

Nigeria's north-central and north-west zones are afflicted with a multi-dimensional crisis rooted in long-standing tensions between ethnic and religious groups and involves attacks by criminal groups and banditry/hirabah (such as kidnapping and grand larceny along major highways). During the past years, the crisis has accelerated because of the intensification of attacks and has resulted in widespread displacement across the region.
Between the 18 and 24 July, 2022, armed clashes in Jibia and Kankara LGAs of Katsina State, and Gummi LGA of Zamfara State, have led to new wave of forced displacement. During the period assessed, the DTM identified an estimated 903 individuals who were affected multiple attacks. On July 19th, an attack was reported in the ward Gangara in Jibia LGA of Katsina State. This attack displaced 145 individuals to the neighbouring wards of Mazanya/Magama and Kusa, both situated within Jibia LGA. On July 23rd, another attack was reported in Katsina State. In the ward Gatakawas/Gari/Mabai of Kankara LGA, 187 individuals were displaced as a result of the attack to the neighbouring wards Kankara A & B, also situated within Kankara LGA.

The DTM Emergency Tracking Tool (ETT) is deployed to track and to collect information on large and sudden population movements, provide frequent updates on the scale of displacement and quantify the affected population when needed. As a sub-component of the Mobility Tracking methodology in Nigeria, ETT utilises direct observation and a broad network of key informants to capture best estimates of the affected population per location, enabling targeted humanitarian response planning.
Between 18 and 24 July 2022, a total of 5,139 new arrivals were recorded in Adamawa and Borno States. The new arrivals were recorded at locations in Askira/Uba, Bama, Damboa, Dikwa, Gwoza, Kala Balge, Monguno and Ngala Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the most conflict-affected state of Borno and in Demsa, Fufore, Girei, Gombi, Hong, Lamurde, Maiha, Michika, Mubi South, Numan, Song, Yola North and Yola South LGAs of Adamawa State.
ETT assessments identified the following movement triggers: flood (1,330 individuals or 26%), military operations (1,265 individuals or 24%), poor living conditions (934 individuals or 18%), improved security (824 individuals or 16%), seasonal farming (472 individuals or 9%), family re-unification (190 individuals or 4%), access to humanitarian support (99 individuals or 2%) and fear of attack (25 individuals or 1%).
Heavy rainfalls have resulted to flooding in Song Gari ward of Song LGA in Adamawa State, 1,330 individuals have been displaced to other locations within the ward and to Gombi LGA in Adamawa State.

- Survey
Between 17 and 23 July the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conducted the seventh round of a rapid representative assessment of the general population in Ukraine to gather insights into internal displacement and mobility flows, and to assess local needs. This general population survey serves as a preliminary source to identify areas with high humanitarian needs and to inform the targeting of response aiming to assist the war affected population. The geographical scope of the assessment covers the entire territory of Ukraine, all five macro regions (East, North, Centre, South, and the city of Kyiv), with the exception of the Crimean peninsula. The general population survey was constructed through a random digit dial (RDD) approach, and 2,000 unique and anonymous respondents aged 18 and over were interviewed using the computer assisted telephone interview (CATI) method. The estimates rely on the UNFPA population data for Ukraine, agreed upon as the common population baseline by the humanitarian community. Those currently outside Ukraine were not interviewed. For further notes on method and limitations, including IOM’s definition of internally displaced persons used for the purpose of this assessment, see page 14 In addition to this General Population Survey, data on recorded IDP presence at hromada level in Ukraine are available from IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix Baseline Assessment (Round 7, July 18 2022 HDX, registration required).
