IOM Yemen DTM’s Rapid Displacement Tracking (RDT) tool collects data on estimated numbers of households forced to flee on a daily basis from their locations of origin or displacement, allowing for regular reporting of new displacements in terms of estimated numbers, geography, and needs. It also tracks returnees who returned to their location of origin.

This report is based on a displacement patterns, needs and intentions survey launched by IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM). All surveys were conducted face-to-face by IOM Slovakia trained enumerators with Ukrainian refugees and TCNs fleeing Ukraine. This report presents a short analysis based on 780 surveys collected between 9 March and 22 May 2022.

In 2021, DTM teams observed 281,527 movements at Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). Out of the total observed movements, 43 per cent (121,095) were incoming flows. People interviewed originated from Ethiopia (66%), Kenya (13%) and Djibouti (10%). In addition, 10 per cent of the incoming flows were recorded as internal movements. Fifty-seven per cent (160,432) of the movements were outgoing flows. The people on the move interviewed mainly intended to reach Ethiopia (46%), Saudi Arabia (23%), Yemen (15%), Kenya (11%) and Djibouti (6%).

As in 2020, the main reason for movements in 2021 was economic. This is a trend observed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have heavily impacted employment and business opportunities. Previously to the pandemic, in 2019, the most common reason for movement was attributed to seasonal migration. The main nationality reported was predominantly Somali (68%) followed by Ethiopian (27%). Half of the migrants interviewed would want to get vaccinated against COVID-19 if the vaccine was offered to them.

The DTM Emergency Tracking Tool (ETT) is deployed to track and to collect information on large and sudden population movements, provide frequent updates on the scale of displacement and quantify the affected population when needed. As a sub-component of the Mobility Tracking methodology in Nigeria. ETT utilises direct observation and a broad network of key informants to capture best estimates of the affected population per location, enabling targeted humanitarian response planning.

Between 16 and 22 May 2022, a total of 2,499 movements were recorded in Adamawa and Borno States. The recorded movements consisted of 1,990 arrivals and 509 departures. Arrivals were recorded at locations in Askira/Uba, Bama, Damboa, Gwoza, Hawul, Kala/Balge, Monguno and Ngala Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the most conflict-affected state of Borno and in Fufore, Gombi, Hong, Lamurde, Maiha, Michika, Mubi North, Mubi South, Numan, Song, Yola North and Yola South LGAs of Adamawa State.
Departures were recorded in Askira/Uba LGA of Borno State and in Fufore, Girei, Gombi, Hong, Maiha, Michika, Mubi South, Numan, Song, Yola North and Yola South LGAs of Adamawa State.

ETT assessments identified the following movement triggers: search for better living conditions (765 individuals or 31%), military operations (590 individuals or 24%), seasonal farming (482 individuals or 19%), improved security (334 individuals or 13%), access to humanitarian support (212 individuals or 8%) and family reunification (116 individuals or 5%).

The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) provides primary data and information on internal displacement and population movements – incountry and at regional and global levels. DTM’s work worldwide informs humanitarian, recovery, transition and development interventions by providing timely data and analysis to relevant actors including governments, United Nations partner agencies, donors and other stakeholders. DTM operates in contexts where conflict, natural disasters and complex emergency settings can cause short-term or protracted displacement, as well as in mixed migration contexts.

In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, there were 15.7 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in 2021.3 This figure constitutes 26 per cent of the global number of IDPs, making the MENA the region with the second highest concentration of IDPs following the sub-Saharan Africa region. Most displacement in the MENA region (81%) has been triggered by armed conflict, in particular in Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen.
