  • Over 542,000 people have crossed into Chad since the onset of the crisis in Sudan. IOM estimates that more than 98,513 among them are Chadian returnees and expects this number to rise to 150,000 by the end of March 2024, due to renewed conflict in Darfur.
  • In coordination with CNARR and humanitarian organizations, IOM has counted 88,604 returnees and counted 241 third-country nationals (from South Sudan, Niger, Ethiopia, the Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Uganda) in 36 localities in three provinces.
  • Most of the returnees currently live in spontaneous locations near the border and are in urgent need of food, water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter, household items, health, and protection.

On 10 September 2023 Storm Daniel hit northeastern Libya, leading to substantial rainfall and sudden floods in the coastal areas and cities. The subsequent collapse of the Mansour and Derna dams severely compounded damages across Derna municipality.

As of October 2023, DTM estimates 44,862 IDPs were displaced across Libya due to the flooding. Out of these, Derna municipality hosts the highest number of IDPs, with 23,500 displaced as a result of the floods caused by Storm Daniel.

This dashboard shows the findings on IDP locations and needs for Derna municipality. The findings for all municipalities currently hosting IDPs due to floods can be accessed here: Libya — Impact of Storm Daniel: An Update on Displacement and Needs (November 2023).

On November 5th, 2023, 28 Chadian nationals (26 men, 2 women) were collectively expelled from Libya and arrived in the town of Ounianga-Kébiron 7 November 2023. Most of the expelled persons come from Guéra, WadiFira, Ouaddaï and Batha. They reported having spent between one and seven months in Libyan prisons in Benghazi, Djidabya and Kouffra before being expelled.

As such, an assessment was carried out in Ounianga-Kébiron 8 November 2023 by an IOM team in order to register these expelled individuals.

During the same day, they received food, non-food items (mainly blankets and mats), healthcare and transport to their places of origin.

IOM Yemen DTM’s Rapid Displacement Tracking (RDT) tool collects data on estimated numbers of households forced to flee on a daily basis from their locations of origin or displacement, allowing for regular reporting of new displacements in terms of estimated numbers, geography, and needs. It also tracks returnees who returned to their location of origin.
