Since October 8 there has been an increase in cross-border incidents between Israel and Lebanon, resulting in the displacement of people both within the South and elsewhere within the country. Since October 10, the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has been conducting the daily monitoring of population movements. The objective of the exercise is to inform preparedness and response planning.

Since the full-scale invasion in February 2022, numerous communities across Ukraine witnessed the arrival of displaced persons from other parts of the country. Continued widespread displacement is likely to put an increasing strain on public services, infrastructure, housing and the labor market in hosting areas. This, as well as perceptions of unequal access to assistance among different groups, carries the potential for increasing tensions between different groups the longer displacement persists.

In this context, the following brief presents key findings related to social cohesion, trust in public institutions, as well as decision-making on durable solutions preferences collected as part of two successive rounds of the General Population Survey (GPS). It aims to inform IOM’s social cohesion programming in Ukraine, as well as to support broader evidence-based programming, policy-making, advocacy, and further research on the subject.

As of September 2023, an estimated 3,674,000 people remain internally displaced in Ukraine with an estimated 6,203,600 displaced abroad according to UNHCR. IOM estimates that 4,573,000 people have returned to their place of habitual residence in Ukraine following a period of displacement, 22 per cent of whom returned from abroad.

To inform targeted interventions aimed at alleviating the vulnerability that stems from poor structural and social conditions in areas of return, the CoRA provides granular data on where returns are occurring, where those who have returned are most vulnerable and why.

Rising water levels upstream from the Akosombo Dam, due primarily to heavy rainfall, caused the Volta River Authority to commence the spillage of excess water on 15 September 2023. The spillage has caused flooding in communities downstream from the dam, destroying homes and farmland along the banks of the River Volta. Some communities were therefore displaced into safe havens (also known as collective centers) in the districts of Ada East, Central Tongu, North Tongu and Shai Osudoku.

This document presents the resumption of migration from the coasts of West Africa to the Canary Islands (Spain). This route, already active in 2006, saw an increasing number of movements in 2023. The risks, deaths and disappearances following shipwrecks are also on the rise along the Atlantic coasts. Between January and September 2023, 14,976 migrants reached the Canary Islands irregularly after crossing by boat from the coasts of West Africa, an increase of 19 per cent compared to 2022 (12,506 migrants).Nevertheless, risks and dangers along the West African Atlantic route remain and 26 shipwrecks were recorded along this route in 2023, resulting in the death or disappearance of 424 migrants.
