About Iraq

Reinforced in January 2014 in response to the need for information on displacement linked to the worsening armed conflict, the DTM programme in Iraq collects key information on internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees through different components and methodologies across the entire country.

Through IOM's Rapid Assessment and Response Teams (RARTs) -composed of 140 field staff- present throughout the Iraqi territory, the DTM collects data on numbers and locations of IDPs and returnees using an extended network of over 4,000 key informants. In addition to information collected from key informants, identified locations hosting IDPs are then visited and directly assessed by the RARTs to collect more detailed and in-depth information on the displaced population.

Mobility Impact due to COVID-19 in Iraq

The current outbreak of COVID-19 has affected global mobility in the form of various travel disruptions, restrictions and blockages. To better understand how COVID-19 affects global mobility, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been working to map the impacts on human mobility, at Global, Regional and Country level. Subsequently, the IOM have initiated the following activities:

COVID-19 Travel Restriction Monitoring - Using secondary data sources, such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA), media reports and information direct from IOM missions, this platform maps and analyzes the various country, territories and areas imposing restrictions, and those with restrictions being imposed upon them, all categorized by restriction type. All analyses is presented at country level.

COVID-19 Country Points of Entry (PoE) Status Baseline Assessment – Using direct input from IOM missions, this dashboard displays daily updated mobility restrictions at location level (airport, land border points, blue border points, internal transit points). For each point of entry, data is collected on: type of restriction, measured applied & timeframe, population category that might be affected from the measures. This data is displayed in the Point of Entry layers on this map.

Iraq — Displacement Report 4 (July 2014)

176,150 families were displaced since January 2014 and 1,381 locations throughout Iraq are hosting IDP families. Over 50,000 IDP families are located in Anbar governorate and 28% of IDPs are located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR).

From January to April 2014 DTM identified 74,010 families comprised of 444,060 individuals, affected by the Anbar crisis. During this 4 month period 814 sites hosting IDPs were also identified and 400, 000 people reportedly fled the country.
