Return Intention

While many of the IDPs continued to be displaced for prolonged periods, there is a noticeable trend of increasing numbers of IDPs returning to their places of origin, as evidenced by Round 45 of DTM assessments (June 2023) identified 2,075,257 returnees in the region. Recognizing the growing number of returnees, the IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), in collaboration with the Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM)/Shelter and NFI and Protection sectors, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),  National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigeria Red Cross Society (NRCS), and other key partners deemed it necessary to assess the future intentions (within the next 12 months) of individuals in displacement areas to provide appropriate solution interventions. The DTM team, with the support of the partners, led the Intention Survey (IS) in Bauchi State (including the other five states of the north-east) to assess IDPs who wish to return to their place of origin, locally integrate at their current location of displacement or relocate to another part of the state (LGA), within or outside the country.

Recognizing the growing number of returnees, the IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), in collaboration with the Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) and Protection sectors, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),  National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), and other key partners deemed it necessary to assess the future intentions (within the next 12 months) of individuals in displacement areas to provide appropriate solution interventions. The DTM of the IOM Nigeria Mission, with the support of the partners, led the Intention Survey (IS) in Borno State (including the other five states of the north-east) through the BHA and ECHO fund. The aim of the IS was to assess IDPs who wish to return to their place of origin, locally integrate at their current location of displacement or relocate to another part of the state (LGA) or within the country. 
 

The Ukrainians and Third Country Nationals Crossing Back to Ukraine report presents findings from face-to-face interviews with individuals crossing back into Ukraine from five neighboring countries (Hungary, Poland, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, and Slovakia).

The findings in this report are based off on 27,653 surveys collected by DTM in 2023 and focuses in particular on the 6,086 surveys of adult individuals going to Ukraine during the fourth quarter of 2023 (October and December, Q4). Almost all (99%) of those who surveyed were Ukrainians, and a very small proportion (1%) were Third-Country Nationals (TCNs).

In Q4 of 2023, 31 per cent of Ukrainian respondents were prospective returnees (intended to stay in Ukraine), while 49 per cent planned to go for a short visit (short-time visitors). Another 20 per cent were unsure about the length of their visit.

The report delves into the socio-demographic profiles, reasons for return, duration of displacement, oblasts of origin and destination, needs and assistance, and experiences of discrimination of the surveyed individuals. The report also provides information on individuals who have already returned to Ukraine after a period of displacement abroad as well as those in Latvia who plan to transit through the Russian Federation to reach areas of non-government-controlled areas in Ukraine.

Between September and October 2022, the International Organization for Migration’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (IOM DTM) undertook its third household-level multi-sector assessment of selected urban areas and camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in South Sudan. The assessment aims to:

• Quantify the prevalence of vulnerabilities and humanitarian needs across sectors, with a focus on food security, economic vulnerability and nutrition as well as selected indicators on shelter and non-food items (SNFI), education, health, water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH), protection (including child protection and gender-based violence) and mental health and psycho-social support (MHPSS).

• Generate a better understanding of urban displacement and migration, including return and relocation after displacement in South Sudan or abroad.

There has been slow progress in the humanitarian situation in South Sudan. People’s humanitarian needs continue to rise, driven by cumulative and compounding effects of years of conflict, sub-national violence, food insecurity, climate crisis and public health challenges. Conflict and insecurity, fueled by sub-national and inter-communal violence, crime, and wide-scale impunity, continue to be among the main drivers of humanitarian needs in South Sudan.

Based on the request of the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT), mandated OCHA, IOM, and REACH to implement Inter-Sectoral Needs Assessment that aimed to understand demographics, multi-sectoral needs (including the level of severity) and barriers to assistance as well as displacement patterns and household-level scale.
