The Survey on Drivers of Migration (SDM), which was published in July 2020, aims to better understand the drivers of migration in Bangladesh among regular and irregular potential migrants along different thematic areas and themes. The survey was conducted with 11,415 potential migrants that were interviewed in 64 districts. 

Following the country-level assessment, data was analyzed at district level in order to gauge potential geographical differences and provide greater nuance and detail to the focus themes i.e. demographics and socioeconomic profiles, migration costs etc.

This report will take a closer look at Sylhet district, located in the Sylhet division, northeastern Bangladesh. Sylhet district is bordered by India in the north, by Maulvibazar district in the south and by Sunamganj and Habiganj districts in the west. With a population of 3,957,000, Sylhet’s economy is predominately agricultural.

This report will take a closer look at Satkhira district, located in the Khulna division, southwestern Bangladesh. Satkhira district is bordered by Jessore district in the north, by Khulna district in the east, by the Bay of Bengal in the south and by India in the west. With a population of 2,079,884, Satkhira’s economy is primarily agricultural and the district is rich in forest resources. Additionally, Satkhira district is one of the most disaster-prone areas of Bangladesh.

Narsingdi district is bordered by Kishoreganj district in the north, by Kishoreganj and Brahmanbaria districts in the east, by Brahmanbaria and Naranyanganj districts in the south and by Gazipur district in the west. With a population of 2,224,944, Narsingdi district’s economy is both agriculture and non-agriculture based. Wholesale and retail trade are important activities in the district.

Kurigram district is bordered by the Indian state of West Bengal in the north, by the Indian state of Assam in the east, by Jamalpur and Gaibandha districts in the south and by Lalmonirhat and Rangpur districts and by the Indian state of West Bengal in the west. With a population of 2,069,273, Kurigram’s economy is largely agriculture-based.

With a population of 2,764,547, Jashore district has a predominately agricultural-based economy.

Dhaka is located in the Dhaka division of central Bangladesh. Dhaka district is bordered by Gazipur and Tangail districts in the north, by Narayanganj district in the east, by Munshinganj and Faridpur districts in the south and by Manikganj district in the west. Dhaka district is the densest district in the country with a population of 12,043,977. It is also the capital and commercial centre of Bangladesh.

It is bordered by Chattogram district in the north, by Bandarban district and Myanmar in the east and by the Bay of Bengal in the south and west. With a population of 2,289,990, Cox’s Bazar’s economy is predominately agricultural. In addition, as Cox’s Bazar is a coastal district, fishing, prawn farming and tourism are major parts of the district’s economy.

Chuadanga district has a population of 1,129,015. Industrial growth plays a vital role in the district’s development.

This report will take a closer look at Chattogram district, located in the Chattogram Division, southeastern Bangladesh. With a population of 7,616,352, Chattogram district is also home to the port city of Chattogram, which is the second largest city in Bangladesh. Chattogram’s economy is non-agricultural, and crops, livestock, forestry and fishery serve as the main sources of household income.
