Mobility Tracking

A fire broke out in Shuwari and Fulatari camps in Dikwa Local Government Area (LGA), Borno state, on 20 February 2023, the fire outbreak affected 165 people living in 39 houses and damaged 34  shelters. The affected people included 57 children, 62 women and 46 men. Most of the affected people lost their personal belongings to the fire, including biometric cards and food ration cards. No injuries or fatalities were reported, the cause of the fire was unknown. The fire victims were living with their neighbours in the same camp while working to rebuild their shelters.

On 23 and 24 June 2023, heavy rainfall struck GGSS,  camp in Mafa LGA, and Doro camp in MMC of Borno State, affecting a total of 1,029 individuals from 190 households. The incidents damaged 149 shelters and 22 latrines.

In response to these events, the DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field team swiftly conducted evaluations to inform the humanitarian community, the government, and partners and to facilitate a targeted response. The field team utilized direct observation and key informant interviews in flash reports to collect representative data and determine the quantity and immediate needs of the affected groups.

On 1st of May, windstorms struck the Transit Camp of the Pulka Bokko Ward in Gwoza LGA of Borno State. The windstorms affected a total of 504 individuals from 136 households. The windstorms also damaged six transit shelters, one communal shelter, and two brick/block latrines were damaged.

Following these events, DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field staff conducted rapid assessments to inform the humanitarian community and Government/partners, and to enable a targeted response. Flash reports utilise direct observation and a broad network of key informants to gather representative data and collect information on the number, profile, and immediate needs of affected populations.

Heavy rainfall hit Low Cost, Unity, Abori Gate, and Central Primary School camps in Damboa LGA of Borno State on May 17, 2023. A total of 2,135 individuals from 795 households were affected by the rain. Two hundred and sixty-two shelters and five latrines were damaged by the heavy rainfall.

Following these events, the DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field team conducted swift evaluations to inform the humanitarian community, the government, and partners and to enable a targeted response. Flash reports involve direct observation and key informant interviews to gather representative data and discover the quantity and immediate needs of affected groups.

On 19 May 2023, heavy rainfall struck Low Cost, Unity, and NRC camps in Damboa and Kaga LGAs of Borno State, affecting a total of 272 individuals from 87 households. The heavy rainfall damaged 70 shelters and 12 latrines.

In response to these events, the DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field team swiftly conducted evaluations to inform the humanitarian community, the government, and partners and to facilitate a targeted response. The field team utilized direct observation and key informant interviews in flash reports to collect representative data and determine the quantity and immediate needs of the affected groups.

On  15 and 18 November 2023, a fire broke out in Muna el Badawy and Dalori camps of Jere and Konduga Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Borno State, which destroyed the shelters and possessions of many Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Many personal items have been lost in the fire, including food ration cards and biometric identification cards. There were no reported injuries or fatalities.

The fire destroyed 350 block/brick shelters and 1,567 makeshift shelters affecting 9,600 individuals in 1,917 households. The affected individuals included 1,827 children, 2,361 women, and 1,573 men. 

On 16 May, windstorms struck GSSSS Camp and Banki Camp in Bama LGA of Borno State. The windstorms affected a total of 619 individuals from 133 households. The windstorms also damaged 78 shelters and five brick/block latrines. 

The DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field staff conducted quick evaluations in the wake of these events to provide the humanitarian community, the government, and partners with information and to enable a focused response. Direct observation and key informants are used in flash reports to collect representative data and learn about the number and immediate needs of affected communities.

On 27 and 28 May 2023, heavy rainfall /windstorm struck GSSSS, Banki camps  in Bama LGA, and Kiva host community in Gwoza LGA of Borno State, affecting a total of 800 individuals from 161 households. The incidents damaged 96 shelters and 42 latrines.

In response to these events, the DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field team swiftly conducted evaluations to inform the humanitarian community, the government, and partners and to facilitate a targeted response. The field team utilized direct observation and key informant interviews in flash reports to collect representative data and determine the quantity and immediate needs of the affected groups.

In South Sudan a multifaceted humanitarian crisis is currently unfolding, driven by a combination of factors, including communal conflicts, land disputes, widespread insecurity, violence, natural disasters, and cross-border displacement. These elements have created a challenging environment for the population, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation. The ongoing instability has led to significant disruptions in livelihoods and access to basic services, leaving many communities vulnerable and in urgent need of assistance.

Between October 16th and 31st, 2024, Raja County witnessed the arrival of 379 returnees from El Geneina in West Dafur. The majority of these individuals relocated within Raja County, primarily due to the deteriorating security conditions in Sudan. This movement indicates a potential stabilization in South Sudan that could encourage further returns in the future. However, while the returnees are hopeful about their reintegration into their communities, they face numerous challenges as they attempt to rebuild their lives after periods of displacement.

South Sudan is currently facing a complex humanitarian crisis characterized by extensive internal displacements. The underlying causes of these displacement dynamics are varied and include communal clashes, flooding, insecurity, violence, natural disasters, and cross-border movements.

Between 16th and 31st October 2024, enumerators from the Displacement Tracking Matrix documented significant disaster (flood) related displacements affecting 15,367 individuals. The majority of these displacements occurred in Warrap where 6,780 individuals were displaced to Gogrial West, 6,156 to Malakal County in Upper Nile State, 1,575 to Guit, and 856 to Nyriol in Jonglei state.

The effect of these displacements calls for urgent humanitarian intervention among the affected population. Those who have been displaced identified their most pressing requirements as being in dire need of food, shelter, and non-food items.
