This report reflects data corresponding to Sudan Mobility Update (8) dataset. The dataset is available here.
Overview:
This report provides an overview of the total population of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sudan, including those displaced both before and after the onset of the conflict on 15 April 2023.
Key Findings:
- An estimated total of 10,890,722 IDPs were displaced to 9,185 locations, in 183 localities, across all 18 states in Sudan.
- An estimated 8,126,265 individuals were displaced internally within Sudan since 15 April 2023.
- An estimated 28 per cent of IDPs who were initially displaced prior to the onset of the current conflict experienced secondary displacement since 15 April 2023.
- Approximately 2,382,043 individuals crossed borders into neighbouring countries since 15 April 2023.
- The top states of origin were Khartoum (34%), South Darfur (19%), and North Darfur (14%).
- The highest proportion of IDPs were hosted in South Darfur (17%), North Darfur (14%), and Gedaref (9%) states.
- Over half (52%) of IDPs were reportedly children under the age of 18-years-old.
Annex 1 includes an operational matrix with a table of estimated IDPs per state, disaggregated by displacement before versus after 15 April 2023.
Note: The number of IDPs displaced post 15 April 2023 (8,126,265 IDPs) includes the estimated 1,056,315 IDPs who were initially displaced prior to 15 April 2023 and experienced secondary displacement since 15 April 2023. DTM Sudan defines an internally displaced person as any person who has been forced or obliged to flee from their habitual residence due to an event dating from 2003 onwards.

Since October 8 there has been an increase in cross-border incidents between Israel and Lebanon, resulting in the displacement of people both within the South and elsewhere within the country. Since October 10, the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has been conducting the daily monitoring of population movements. The objective of the exercise is to inform preparedness and response planning.

From 1 January to 28 September 2024, IOM Yemen DTM tracked 2,725 households (HH) (16,350 Individuals) who experienced displacement at least once.
Between 22 and 28 September 2024, IOM Yemen DTM tracked 23 households (138 individuals) displaced at least once. The majority of people moved into/within the following governorates and districts:
- Ma’rib (11 HH) – Ma’rib City (9 HHs), Ma’rib (2 HHs) districts. Most displacements in the governorate originated from Ibb and Dhamar.
- Ta’iz (10 HHs) – Al Makha (6 HHs), Al Mudhaffar (3 HHs), Al Misrakh (1 HH) districts. Most displacements in the governorate were internal.
- Al Hodeidah (2 HHs) – Al Khukhah (1 HH), Hays (1 HH) districts. Most displacements in the governorate originated from Ta’iz and Al Hodeidah.
The majority of people moved from the following governorates and districts:
- Ta’iz (10 HHs) – Mawza (4 HHs), Maqbanah (3 HHs), Sharab Ar Rawnah (2 HHs) districts.
- Lahj (2 HHs) – Al Qubaytah (2 HHs) district.
- Dhamar (2 HHs) – Al Hada (2 HHs) district.

IOM Yemen DTM's Rapid Displacement Tracking (RDT) tool collects data on estimated numbers of households forced to flee on a daily basis from their locations of origin or displacement, allowing for regular reporting of new displacements in terms of estimated numbers, geography, and needs. It also tracks returnees who returned to their location of origin.

IOM identified 23 additional households displaced in the previous reporting period, which covered 15 - 21 September 2024, in the governorates of Ta'iz (17 HHs), Al Hodeidah (5 HHs), and Ma'rib (1 HH). These figures have been added to the cumulative displacement total recorded since the beginning of the year.

his information was collected following the armed violence in the first section of Canot in the municipality of Saut d’Eau that occurred on 23rd September 2024. A total of 627 individuals were displaced as a result of this violence. All internally displaced persons (IDPs) sought refuge with host families: 48% in Mirebalais, 34% in other communal sections of Saut d’Eau, 11% in Boucan Carré, 5% in Hinche, and 2% in Thomonde.

On 18 and 20 September 2024, farmer/herder clashes occurred in the communities of Ugba HC in Mbayam ward of Logo local government area (LGA) and Tse Azege in Ugbaam ward of Ukum LGA, all in Benue State. There were reports of one injury and two fatalities. The clashes affected 43 individuals in seven households, including 21 children, 13 women and nine men.
Additionally, on 18, 19 and 22 September 2024, armed bandits attacked the communities of Tse Abeda and Abeda HC in Mbavuur ward of Logo LGA in Benue State. These attacks resulted in 28 injuries and two fatalities, affecting 352 individuals in 60 households, including 212 children, 85 women and 55 men.
