Crisis Responses
During the COVID-19 pandemic, IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), monitors the movements to and from Nigeria's Adamawa and Borno States in north-east Nigeria. Assessments are conducted at Points of Entry located along the border with Cameroon.
During the period 05 - 11 February 2022, 225 movements were observed at three Points of Entry in Borno state. Of the total movements recorded, 100 were incoming from the Far North Region in Cameroon, eight were incoming from Ndjamena in Chad, and 16 were incoming from Bol, also in Chad. Ninety-five outgoing movements were recorded from Borno State to the Far North
Region in Cameroon, four outgoing movements to Bol in Chad and two outgoing movements to Ndjamena in Chad

Nigeria's north-central and north-west zones are afflicted with a multidimensional crisis rooted in long-standing tensions between ethnic and religious groups and involves attacks by criminal groups and banditry/hirabah (such as kidnapping and grand larceny along major highways). During the past years, the crisis has accelerated because of the intensification of attacks and has resulted
in widespread displacement across the region.
Between the 7th and 13th of February 2022, armed clashes between herders and farmers; and bandits and local communities have led to new waves of population displacement. Following these events, rapid assessments were conducted by DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field staff to inform the humanitarian community and government partners, and enable targeted response. Flash reports utilise direct observation and a broad network of key informants to gather representative data and collect information on the number, profile and immediate needs of affected populations.
During the assessment period, the DTM identified an estimated 1,427 individuals who were affected by the attacks. A total of 1,406 individuals were displaced to neighbouring wards in the LGAs Bakori in Katsina State and Zangon Kataf in Kaduna State. A total of 33 casualties were reported, including 12 injuries and 21 fatalities.

The crisis has accelerated during the past years because of the intensification of attacks and has resulted in widespread displacement across the region.
On 1st February 2022, armed clashes between bandits and local communities have led to new wave of population displacement in communities located in Agban ward of Kaura LGA in Kaduna State. Following this event, a rapid assessment was conducted by DTM (Displacement Tracking Matrix) field staff to inform the humanitarian community and government partners, and enable targeted response. Flash reports utilise direct observation and a broad network of key informants to gather representative data and collect information on the number, profile and immediate needs of affected populations.
During the assessment, the DTM identified an estimated number of 2,660 individuals who were affected by the attack. A total of 2,658 individuals were displaced to neighbouring wards in Jema’a LGA in the same Kaduna State. A total of 10 casualties were reported, including 8 injuries and 2 fatalities.

The DTM Emergency Event Tracking (EET) is deployed to track sudden displacement and population movements, provide more frequent updates on the scale of displacement, and quantify the affected population when needed. As a subcomponent of the new Mobility Tracking methodology in Sudan (Round Three), and activated on a need basis, EET utilises a broad network of key informants to capture best estimates of the affected population presence per location – a useful tool for humanitarian response planning and design.
Flow Monitoring is a component of DTM and it is used to track population movements inside a country, within a region or across regions.
The dataset includes:
- monthly and daily figures on arrivals by sea and by land to Europe (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Spain)
- monthly and daily figures on transits along the Western Balkan region (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia, Kosovo*)
- figures on reported country of origin of arrivals and transits
- figures on reported migrant presence in reception centers

The IOM rapid assessment (Emergency Tracking Tool, ETT) is a tool set up to collect information on large and sudden movements of populations. This information is collected following field visits and/or telephone interviews with key informants from displacement sites or host communities. Further information is then collected and analyzed from Multi-Sectoral Rapid Assessment (RAM) tools. This report presents the results of the assessments conducted from January 25 to February 01, 2022
