The dataset includes internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees at the sub-national level, along with information on the reasons for displacement, places of origin, and dates of multiple displacements.

In the context of Zambia’s drought response, displacement dynamics remain complex and evolving. Reports indicate movements of IDPs from drought-affected regions to areas with better access to water and resources. While some individuals have permanently resettled, others frequently move between their place of displacement and their area of origin.

Between October 19 and December 11, 2024, DTM team in Zambia has identified 202,218 individuals representing 40,172 households, including 140,261 internally displaced persons, 42,200 absent residents departed in country and 19,757 internal returnees.

In November 2024, 35,668 migratory movements were observed at flow monitoring points (FMP) in Djibouti. Of these movements, 13,620 were incoming from Ethiopia, a decrease of 19 per cent compared to October. The decrease was mainly due to the tensions between smugglers in Ethiopia and Yemen. Most smugglers in Yemen have stopped collaborating with those in Ethiopia and Djibouti, due to the rising cost of their services in Yemen. During this period, the number of stranded migrants decreased by 20 per cent due to the mass returns to Ethiopia of migrants stranded in Obock and Tadjourah. These migrants were primarily Ethiopians of Amhara, Tigray, Afar, and Oromo origin. Additionally, the number of migrants returning from Yemen fell by 27 per cent over the period, due to intensified controls by the Yemeni authorities and to a reduction in the activities of smugglers.

Tropical Cyclone Dikeledi made landfall in Mozambique on January 13, 2025, causing widespread humanitarian needs across Nampula Province. The cyclone’s high-intensity winds and heavy rainfall inflicted severe damage to housing, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure, further deepening pre-existing vulnerabilities and significantly undermining community resilience. Findings from the Initial Rapid Assessment (IRA), conducted by the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in collaboration with Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD), estimate that approximately 80,780 households (283,334 individuals) have been affected. Among them, approximately 45,333 individuals are living with diverse disabilities, including physical, cognitive, sensory, and psychosocial impairments.

Early reports indicate that 44,012 houses sustained partial damage, while 36,853 were completely destroyed, leaving a total of 80,865 shelters damaged across the province. The most severely impacted districts include Mossuril (62,003 individuals), Ilha de Mozambique (58,610), Monapo (44,287), Nacala Porto (25,394), Angoche (23,991), and Liupo (19,793), collectively accounting for 83% of the affected population. All accommodation centers have since closed, with displaced families returning to their original homes despite ongoing challenges. Immediate priority needs include shelter and non-food items (NFIs), Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions, food assistance, and healthcare services. Urgently needed NFIs include tarpaulins, mosquito nets, and mattresses. Joint multi-sectoral needs assessments, led by INGD and humanitarian partners, are ongoing to monitor the evolving needs and living conditions of the affected communities.

Between 12 November and 12 December 2024, DTM teams (70 enumerators) conducted drought assessments in three provinces (Southern, Western, and North-Western). The assessment focused on the number of IDP arrivals, departures, and returns due to drought and other climate-related factors, as well as the basic needs and vulnerabilities of each population group. Data collection was based on key informant interviews conducted at ward level across 577 wards in 37 districts.
