Since 24 February 2022, refugees from Ukraine and Third Country Nationals (TCNs) have been fleeing to neighbouring countries as a result of the war. As of June 2023, more than twelve million refugees from Ukraine were recorded at various border crossings entering Poland and ten million had crossed back since February 2022. This report is based on surveys collected in Poland between 01 April and 30 June 2023 at the train and bus stations in Przemysl, one of the primary border crossing points between Ukraine and Poland.

Key Findings:

• Demographics: 59% of respondents were traveling with at least one child in their group. Among male returnees (5%), 70% were over the age of 60 years.

• Top 3 countries of stay abroad: Poland (49%), Germany (25%),Czechia (17%).

• Top oblasts of origin: Dnipropetrovska (19%), Kharkivska (16%), Kyiv city (16%).

• Intended destination: 93% of respondents were planning to return to their oblast of origin. Seven per cent of those, who intended on returning to another oblast, were mainly from Donetska, Kharkivska, Zaporizka, Khersonska and Dnipropetrovska oblasts.

• Intentions upon crossing back: long-term stay (50%),short-term visit (40%), 10% were not sure.

• Top needs at the time of interview:* health services (10%), financial support (9%), medicine (8%), food (6%) and personal safety (5%). 34% of respondents did not report any needs.

• Top areas of assistance received:* financial support (32%), food assistance (22%), accommodation assistance (17%), WASH (Water, sanitation and hygiene) items (12%), clothes (7%) and transportation support (5%).

IOM has deployed its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) tools since mid-April 2022 to collect individual surveys in neighbouring countries with persons crossing into, as well as those residing in Poland. With the aim to improve the understanding of main profiles, displacement patterns, intentions and needs of those moving into or residing in Poland. This report is based on surveys collected in Poland between 01 April and 30 June 2023 in various voivodeships, such as Podkarpackie, Lubelskie, Pomorskie, Malopolskie and Mazowieckie.

Key Findings

• Demographics of respondents: 94% of respondents were female. Among male respondents, 60% were over the age of 60 years. • Length of stay: 34% of respondents stayed in Poland for less than a month at the time of the survey. 50% of respondents arrived in Poland in the first months after February 2022.

• Top oblasts of origin of respondents who arrived in Poland within one month of the survey: Kyiv (15%), Lvivska (13%), Dnipropterovska (11%), Kharkivska (9%).

• Employment status: 36% of respondents were employed at the time of survey (28% in Q1)*, 5% were unemployed and not looking for a job (18% in Q1), and 18% were unemployed and looking for a job (17% in Q1).

• Legal status: 63% of Ukrainians surveyed had applied for EU temporary protection status or refugee status. The main reasons for not applying were that respondents planned to leave (19%), planned to apply soon (12%), did not know how to apply (2%) or were not eligible (1%).

• Top four needs reported at the moment of the interview: cash support (17%), medical needs (12%), job placement (12%) and housing (11%).**

• Travel mode: 63% of respondents travelled in a group. 9% of those, travelling in a group, reported having at least one child and elderly person in their household.**

This report is based on a survey of displacement patterns, needs and intentions conducted by IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in the countries included in the Regional Response Plan for Ukraine in 2023: 6 countries neighbouring Ukraine – Belarus, Hungary, Poland, Republic of Moldova, Romania and Slovakia – and other 5 countries particularly impacted by the arrivals of refugees from Ukraine since the start of the war in February 2022 – Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The analysis presented in this report is based on data collected between April and June 2023.

Key Findings:

• Top oblasts of origin: Kharkivska (14%), Donetska (12%), Dnipropetrovska (11%), Khersonska (9%), Zaporizka (8%).
• Intentions to move: no intentions to move (95%), move within current country (1%), to another country (1%), where top 3 were Poland, Latvia and the United Kingdom.
• Employment status: employed (33%), retired (24%), unemployed and looking for a job (14%), unemployed and not looking for a job (12%), maternity/paternity leave (12%).
• Top needs:* financial support (27%), health services (22%), medicines (18%), employment (14%), food products (12%).
• Top areas of assistance received:* food products (90%), personal hygiene and sanitary supplies (85%), financial support (83%), transportation (58%), clothes and shoes (53%).
• Top inclusion challenges*: financial issues (23%), language barrier (14%), employment (12%), housing (11%), social services (8%).

As of June 2023, the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in the East and Horn of Africa was active in seven countries (Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda), and its methodology includes four main components (mobility tracking, flow monitoring, registrations and surveys).

30 ressortissants tchadiens (tous des hommes) ont été expulsés collectivement de la Libye et sont arrivés dans la ville d’Ounianga-Kébir le 22 août 2023. La grande partie des personnes expulsées sont originaires d’Oum-Hadjar et d’Abéché. Ces derniers ont affirmé avoir été emprisonnés en Libye pendant un à deux ans à Benghazi puis trois mois à Koufra avant d'être expulsés.

Ainsi, ces personnes expulsées n’ont reçu aucune assistance à part les sacs OIM (contenant des vêtements) lors de leur expulsion vers le Tchad. En effet, elles vivent dans une situation de vulnérabilité critique et ne disposent d'aucun moyen pour poursuivre leur voyage vers leur communauté d'origine. De ce fait, elles ont indiqué avoir urgemment besoin d’assistance en transport vers leurs localités d’origine, de nourritures après avoir fait plusieurs jours sans manger, ainsi que des articles non-alimentaires.

30 Chadian nationals (all men) were collectively expelled to Libya and arrived in the town of Ounianga-Kébir on 22 august 2023. The vast majority of expelled are originally from Oum-Hadjar and Abéché. Additionally, these individuals reported having spent 1 to 2 years in Libyan prisons in Benghazi and then 3 months in Koufra before being expelled.

 These expelled individuals have not received any assistance apart from the IOM bags (containing clothes) during their expulsion to Chad. In fact, they are living in a dire condition, and do not have any support to continue their trip towards their communities of origin. As such, they reported urgent needs for transport assistance to their localities of origin, food after going several days without eating, as well as non-food items.
