A month after the beginning of clashes in Sudan, over 90,000 people have crossed the border into Chad. IOM estimates that more than 20,500 of them are Chadian returnees and expects this number to rise to 25,000 in the coming weeks. 

Intentions surveys show that many returnees are waiting for family members to join them or hope to return to Sudan to recover their belongings.  Most returnees are settled in spontaneous locations near the border with Sudan and are in urgent need of basic goods and services such as food, water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter, non-food items, health and protection. 

IOM has trained several NGO and Government partners on site management to support better organization of the assistance provided to returnees.

Finally, the beginning of the rainy season threatens to hinder the access of humanitarian actors to vulnerable populations who do not want to leave the border areas.

Since the beginning of clashes in April in Sudan, over 150,000 people have crossed the border into Chad. IOM estimates that more than 38 100 of them are Chadian returnees and expects this number to rise to 60,000 in the coming weeks.  In coordination with CNARR and humanitarian officials, IOM has registered 27 056 returnees and observed 68 third-country nationals (from South Sudan, Niger, Ethiopia, the Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, Norway, Uganda and Nigeria) in 26 localities in three provinces. 

Most of the returnees are currently residing in spontaneous locations near the border and are in urgent need of essential goods and services such as food, water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter, household items, health, and protection. • In recent days, an estimated 15 000 people have crossed from Sudan into Adre, a Chadian town located near the border. Many displaced persons have been injured and are in immediate need of medical attention as the capacity of the nearest hospital is being stretched thin. Other reported immediate needs include food and WASH. Many unaccompanied children have also been reported.

Au cours des derniers jours, près de 15 000 personnes fuyant l’insécurité à El Geneina dans l’Ouest du Darfour sont arrivées dans la localité d’Adré, dans la province du Ouaddai à l’Est du Tchad. De nombreuses personnes déplacées ont été blessées et ont besoin de soins médicaux immédiats car la capacité de l’hôpital le plus proche est mise à rude épreuve. Between August and September 2022, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), through its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) methodology, deployed the Site Assessment (SA) and Village Assessment Survey (VAS) tools to assess the mobility, needs and vulnerabilities of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and returning IDPs across Ethiopia.

According to data collected, living conditions of IDPs in the assessed sites continue to be inadequate and unsafe. In most assessed sites, no HH was living in individual HH shelters (1,937 sites, or 88.05%). In addition, data also shows that access to emergency shelter kits is limited and that needs related to shelter are acute. In line with these findings, in 62.16% of villages, the majority of returning IDPs had not received any Non-Food Item (NFI) upon return, showing a poor situation both in the sites of displacement and villages of return.

Mobility Tracking Matrix is a system based on IOM’s Global Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) methodology. It is designed to regularly and systematically capture, process and disseminate information to provide a better understanding of the movements and evolving needs of mobile populations, whether on site or en route. In March 2023, MTM verified Baseline Mobility Assessment data through phone calls with key informants in Kazakhstan to track mobility of migrant workers. MTM enables IOM and its partners to maximize resources, set priorities, and deliver better-targeted, evidence-based, mobilitysensitive and sustainable humanitarian assistance and development programming.

This report is based on a survey developed by IOM to offer an overview of the living conditions, intentions, needs, and integration challenges of displaced persons from Ukraine1 in Sweden at the beginning of the second year of implementation of the temporary protection (TP) directive in the country.
Commissioned by the Swedish Government and coordinated by the Swedish Government’s Offices, it was conducted between April and mid-May 2023 online and through phone interviews to overcome potential biases and increase the strengths inherent in these two data collection methods.

The total sample is composed of 4,746 adult respondents, which is about 19 per cent of the total reference population of adults with a TP permit in Sweden as of mid-March 2023. Of them, 4,682 are Ukrainian nationals and 64 are Third-Country Nationals (TCNs). The size of the sample as well as the depth of qualitative comments accompanying the replies to closed-ended questions make this study a unique source of data and information on the overall reception system in the country, provided by the direct beneficiaries
