In January 2023, 58,629 movements were tracked at nine Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs) at the Ugandan border with Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Republic of Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan. These locations were chosen strategically as major transit points for monitoring cross-border movements after the Ministry of Health had declared an outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus (SVD) at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) in Mubende district on 20 September 2022.

Most people were leaving Uganda (76%) mostly due to economic factors (40%), while one quarter (25%) of overall movements were returning to their habitual place of residence. It is important to highlight that 10 per cent of people tracked were children, while there were 900 pregnant or lactating women.

The CBNA is an integral component of DTM's Baseline Mobility Assessment (BMA), which (in a jointly released dataset) tracks mobility and displacement. The objective of the CBNA is to provide a baseline for programmatic priorities and geographical targeting of assistance, by supplying summary statistics of socio-economic indicators such as employment, household finances, markets, safety and security, rule of law, health, education, food and nutrition, shelter, WASH and received assistance. This file contains data from DTM Afghanistan's 16th round of the Community-Based Needs Assessment (CBNA), which was conducted between September and December 2022. The CBNA provides a comprehensive overview of the evolving vulnerabilities and multisectoral needs in communities hosting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees from abroad. These numbers are collected at the community level and are strictly estimates.

From 15 April 2023, armed clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in multiple cities across Sudan, including Khartoum, Al Fasher, Kebkabiya, Merowe, Nyala, Zalingi, Ag Geneina, and El Obeid. DTM Sudan has been receiving reports of widespread displacement across different states in Sudan due to the ongoing security situation.

  • Since 15 April 2023, DTM estimates that approximately 1,428,551 individuals (286,207 households) have been displaced internally as a result of the conflict.
  • Notably, the current estimate for displacement in the previous 52 days is greater than that of recorded displacement during the previous 4 years.
  • Furthermore, an estimated additional 476,811 individuals have crossed into neighbouring countries.

Due to the ongoing nature of the fighting, many areas reportedly remain inaccessible to humanitarian actors. DTM estimates of displacement are based on preliminary reports from field teams and should be taken as estimations only. Additional reports of displacement are likely to emerge as the situation becomes clearer.

The IDP caseload has sought shelter in locations across all of Sudan’s 18 states. IDPs have been originally displaced from six states, including Khartoum, West Darfur, South Darfur, North Darfur, North Kordofan, and Central Darfur.

Disclaimer: DTM Sudan notes that military clashes remain continuous in many areas across Sudan in particular in Khartoum and the Darfur region – limiting humanitarian access. Additionally, field teams have reported severe telecommunication and connectivity issues, as well as escalating economic pressures which have impacted the capacity for domestic travel. As such, DTM is currently conducting remote interviews with key informants across its network and is currently unable to engage in the additional verification of these figures. Data on flows into neighbouring countries is based on available information from DTM flow monitoring networks and secondary sources.
