Mali — Flow Monitoring Report 12 (January 2017)

Since June 2016, DTM Mali has been tracking the movement of migrants in the regions of Gao and Segou (in Benena). Migrants, mostly come from sub-Saharan countries, and West Africa in particular. During this collection round, 265 incoming individuals and 2,306 outgoing individuals were identified at 3 active Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). 93% of identified migrants on the flow monitoring points are citizens of the following five countries: Guinea, Mali, Gambia, Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire. The vast majority of recorded migrants at flow monitoring points (FMPs) were young men (direct observation). Among the migrants, several persons under the age of 18 were identified. Some travel accompanied by adult legal guardians while others travel alone (unaccompanied and separated children).  The majority of the migrants surveyed indicated their intention to travel to Algeria and Libya while 37% said they want to go to Europe, mainly to Spain and Italy. In contrast to previous months, outgoing flows seem to have decreased. Difficult weather conditions at this time of year and recent deportations from Algeria seem to deter migrants from undertaking the desert crossing.
