Sobre Burkina Faso

Since 2018, Burkina Faso has been faced with an increasing number of attacks by extremist groups as well as intercommunal tensions that have degenerated into violent attacks, displacing people across different regions of the country. At the same time, the resurgence of violence in Mali's central strip, in the form of a cycle of retaliations linked to clashes between pastoralists and farmers, has forced thousands of people to flee the country and settle in the northern region of Burkina Faso. In response to the need for information on internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees and the need to establish a reliable data collection system, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) deployed the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) in July 2019, in partnership with the Secretariat of the National Council for Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation (SP CONASUR).

The activities of DTM consist in conducting basic assessments and registering IDPs living in camps and host communities in Burkina Faso. The information collected through DTM, which includes basic assessments and IDP registration, will contribute to providing a comprehensive profile of IDP populations in Burkina Faso. They will be shared with all stakeholders and will enable the government and humanitarian partners to identify the needs of displaced populations in order to provide them with better assistance. In addition, DTM in Burkina Faso is also implementing Flow Monitoring projects. The purpose of this exercise is to collect information on the number, profiles and characteristics of travellers passing through areas of high mobility and key transit points.

In Burkina Faso, Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs) have been installed in Ouagadougou and Dori / Seytenga since February 2018, Kantchari in March 2018, and Faramana and Yendéré since April 2018. Flow Monitoring consists of two implemented tools: 1) a counting exercise (Flow Monitoring Registry), during which the number, the demographic characteristics, the origin and destination and the means of transport of the travellers are recorded; 2) an individual survey (Flow Monitoring Survey), which is an in-depth interview with a sample of travellers about their profile and their migration experience.
