About Somalia
IOM Somalia Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) aims to collect, analysis and disseminate information on displacement. DTM is IOM’s information management system to track and monitor numbers, locations, movements, needs and vulnerabilities of displaced people. The data outputs, including reports, maps, datasets and online interactive resources, support responses in humanitarian crisis, evidence-based decision making, durable solutions programming and migration research. DTM Somalia was first launch in 2016.
Since the collapse of the Somali central government in 1991, Somalia has suffered a highly complex protracted conflict characterized by changing political dynamics and power shifts. Forced displacement remains an ongoing reality for people living in Somalia due to conflict, environmental hardships, combined with inadequate resource distribution that is often exacerbated by clan-based, ideological differences and land and natural resource competition. Natural hazards, including drought and flooding, combined with widespread security threats have caused one of the world’s largest displacement crises, with 3.8 million IDPs recorded at the end of 2022. Somalia also has a strategic geographical position on the eastern route, which connects the Horn of Africa to the Gulf countries, representing one of the most dangerous and frequented migration corridors in the world.

In Week 3 (2021), from 10 to 16 January 2021, a total of 4,770 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 61 per cent were incoming flows and 39 per cent were outgoing flows.
In December 2020, a total of 19,601 movements were observed at Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). This represents an increase of 6% in comparison with November 2020 when 18,434 movements were observed.
In Week 2 (2021), from 3 to 9 January 2021, a total of 5,009 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 62 per cent were incoming flows and 38 per cent were outgoing flows.
Baseline 1 assessment (B1) as a component of Mobility Tracking (MT) involves collecting basic data on population presence and accessibility of settlements. The assessment is carried out remotely by setting up a network of key informants (KI) for each district.
In Week 53 (2020) and Week 1 (2021), from 27 December 2020 to 2 January 2021, a total of 5,055 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 63 per cent were incoming flows and 37 per cent were outgoing flows.
In Week 52, from 20 December 2020 to 26 December 2020, a total of 4,308 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 73 per cent were incoming flows and 27 per cent were outgoing flows.
In Week 51, from 13 December 2020 to 19 December 2020, a total of 3,793 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 77 per cent were incoming flows and 23 per cent were outgoing flows.
In Week 50, from 6 December 2020 to 12 December 2020, a total of 4,521 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 69 per cent were incoming flows and 31 per cent were outgoing flows.
In November 2020, a total of 18,434 movements were observed at FlowMonitoring Points (FMPs).
In Week 49, from 29 November 2020 to 5 December 2020, a total of 4,166 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 75 per cent were incoming flows and 25 per cent were outgoing flows.
In Week 48, from 22 November 2020 to 28 November 2020, a total of 3,877 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 79 per cent were incoming flows and 21 per cent were outgoing flows.
In Week 47, from 15 November 2020 to 21 November 2020, a total of 4,287 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 79 per cent were incoming flows and 21 per cent were outgoing flows.
In Week 46, from 8 November 2020 to 14 November 2020, a total of 4,240 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 78 per cent were incoming flows and 22 per cent were outgoing flows.
In October 2020, a total of 19,932 movements were observed at Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). This represents a decrease of 34% in comparison with October 2019 when 29,413 movements were observed.
In Week 45, from 1st November 2020 to 7 November 2020, a total of 4,749 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 69 per cent were incoming flows and 31 per cent were outgoing flows.

In Week 44, from 25 October 2020 to 31 October 2020, a total of 4,314 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 73 per cent were incoming flows and 27 per cent were outgoing flows.
In Week 43, from 18 October 2020 to 24 October 2020, a total of 4,715 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 72 per cent were incoming flows and 28 per cent were outgoing flows.
In Week 42, from 11 October 2020 to 17 October 2020, a total of 4,496 movements were observed at various flow monitoring points (FMP) across Somalia, of which 75 per cent were incoming flows and 25 per cent were outgoing flows.
In September 2020, a total of 16,598 movements were observed at Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). This represents a decrease of 46% in comparison with September 2019 when 30,982 movements were observed.
