The Jowhar Offstream Storage Programme (JOSP) focuses on improving flood management and water storage for agriculture in the Jowhar and Balcad districts, within Hirshabelle state in southern Somalia. The initiative is centered on enhancing hydraulic infrastructure in the Shabelle River Floodplain – a fertile land on which communities have relied for crop farming for centuries. A high priority for federal, state and local governments, cutting across ministries responsible for agriculture and irrigation, energy and water resources, planning and durable solutions, and interior affairs, JOSP is supported by FAO, IOM, UN-Habitat, UNIDO, UNEP and partners, with the aim of building climate-resilient and inclusive communities surrounding the Shabelle river.
This survey offers important insights that seek to support authorities, JOSP partners, and stakeholders by providing reliable information on households along the Shabelle river, focusing on DACs' proximity to the canal and reservoir rehabilitation. Detailed findings under each thematic area are documented throughout this report.
