Between 1 July and 30 September 2023, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), through its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) methodology, deployed the Flow Monitoring Survey (FMS) across the 6 Flow Monitoring points (FMPs) in the country to assess the socio-economic profile of migrants, their intentions and expectations, details about their journey and the needs they may have. The FMPs are located in Metema, Galafi, Moyale, Dawale, Tog Wochale and Kurmuk. On 11 May 2023, a new FMP was established in Kurmuk, Benishangul Gumz region, in response to ensure coverage of flows from Sudan.

A total of 4,638 migrants across the 6 FMPs are included in the analysis. Overall, the majority of respondents departed from Sudan (2,238 respondents, 48.3%) followed by respondents who departed from Ethiopia (2,172 respondents, 46.8%). The most reported intended final destination was Ethiopia, reported by 38.2% of the respondents. The most reported main reasons for migration were conflict (51.1%), economic reasons (43.2%), access to services (10.6%) and slow environmental change (4.9%).
