In response to recent movements, IOM Afghanistan re-launched its DTM Flow Monitoring activity at the beginning of 2024 to better understand the mobility dynamics at Afghanistan’s borders.
From when the reporting period started to where it ends, (15 August 2021 to 15 August 2023), the gap between total outflows and inflows has dwindled between Afghanistan and two of its neighbouring countries, that is the Islamic Republic of Iran and Pakistan.

IOM Pakistan collects data on the outflows of Afghan migrants at the Torkham and Chaman border crossing points to better understand the migration movements of Afghan migrants returning to Afghanistan from Pakistan.

Between 16 and 30 November 2023, 66,662 Afghan nationals returned to Afghanistan, including 33,091 through the Torkham BCP, 30,253 through the Chaman BCP, 2,777 through the Ghulam Khan BCP and 541 through the Badini BCP.
On 20 November 2023, Mount Ulawun volcano on the border of the West New Britain (WNB) and East New Britain (ENB) provinces erupted, spewing ash plumes.
