This report provides a brief analysis of the humanitarian situation following a major earthquake that struck the East Sepik province in Papua New Guinea on 24 March 2024. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.9 MMS and a depth of 40.15 km, occurred at approximately 06:22 local time (GMT+10) in Gawi Rural Local Level Government (LLG) area, 38 kilometers northeast of Ambunti.

The earthquake caused significant losses and damages to several communities in 14 L Gs. Soon after, reports on flash flooding in wards located in the districts of Ambunti/Drekikier, Angoram, and Wosera Gawi followed.

The East Sepik Provincial Disaster Centre (PDC) is gathering data from the affected communities and reports at least 10,703 affected households, of which 2,771 have been internally displaced. As of the latest report, the earthquake has caused five deaths and injured 12 people. Currently, there are no reports of missing persons. The figures reported are not exhaustive and expected to increase as more information is received.

Severe weather conditions have plagued the Papua New Guinea highlands over the past several weeks, triggering widespread flooding and landslides. The provinces of Western Highlands, Jiwaka, Chimbu, and Eastern Highlands have borne the brunt of the disaster, experiencing significant loss of life, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure damage. Roads and bridges are severely compromised, hindering access and relief efforts. Limited internet and phone connectivity in some areas further complicate the situation, impeding a comprehensive assessment of the damage. The risk of further deterioration remains high, necessitating close monitoring and a swift response.

According to the data collected in coordination with governmental and non-governmental counterparts, there are at least 9,355 internally displaced persons (IDPs) across these four provinces. The total number of people impacted by the flooding exceeds 50,000. It is crucial to note that these figures are likely to rise as further information from the field becomes available. The ongoing heavy rainfall in the region presents a significant risk of displacing more people and increasing the overall affected population.

IOM Yemen DTM’s Rapid Displacement Tracking (RDT) tool collects data on estimated numbers of households forced to flee on a daily basis from their locations of origin or displacement, allowing for regular reporting of new displacements in terms of estimated numbers, geography, and needs. It also tracks returnees who returned to their location of origin.

Since the beginning of hostilities between the Mouvement du 23 Mars (M23) armed group and the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and their allies in late 2022, a significant displacement crisis has developed in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in the province of North Kivu. Many individuals and families have been uprooted from their communities, seeking shelter in the provincial capital - Goma - due to deteriorating security conditions.

Fighting throughout the crisis has forced households to abandon their residences, leading to largescale displacement from their zones of origin to host families, established sites, collective centers, and newly created sites. In response to these population movements, IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) has conducted registration exercises in IOM-managed sites throughout the ongoing crisis. In order to provide an updated overview of site-level populations and to facilitate the provision of humanitarian assistance, DTM conducted registration operations in 6 sites and 7 collective centres in the city of Goma, North Kivu between 7 and 18 November 2024.

This dashboard presents key findings drawn from this registration operation in the displacement sites of Lac Vert/Bulengo, Rusayo I, Rego, Lac Vert/8ème Cepac Mugunga, EP Neema/Don Bosco, and Mudja as well as in 7 smaller collective centres. Registration teams visited these displacement sites to verify the presence of displaced households, shelter by shelter. In each inhabited tent, the enumerators recorded the households present. This operation was conducted  in collaboration with IOM’s Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) team and was carried out in collaboration with the Commission Nationale pour les Réfugiés (CNR) of North Kivu.
