Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) estimates more than 525,000 people to be affected by the landfall of Tropical Storm Filipo directly impacting communities of Inhambane, Sofala and Maputo from 12 March. As of 11 March, INGD have estimated more than 55,000 people already affected since the 2023/2024 rainy season started. As of 13 March 2024, available reports indicate 1,388 individuals (218 families) have taken shelter in 4 accommodation centres (ACs) in Inhambane. 1,038 (148 families) are accommodated in 3 schools whilst 350 individuals (70 families) are accommodated at a local church in Malaia locality. Shelter and non-food items have been reported as the top most priority needs among all accommodation centres. Other reported priority needs include Agriculture and Food security, WASH, health and access to markets. As rain and flood events develop, ongoing joint assessments with INGD and humanitarian partners monitor the needs and conditions of affected populations in the region.

Baseline Mobility Assessment (BMA) was conducted in all five provinces and all 12 districts/cities (including Khujand and Khorugh cities, and Rudaki, Kulob, Panj, Vanj, Vahdat, Bokhtar, Firdawsi, Sino, Shohmansur and Ismoili Somoni dsitricts). This assessment covered 919 communities through 2,816 key informant interviews. Based on the key informants' estimates, 2,581 international migrant workers were hosted in the assessed communities in Tajikistan during 2020 and 2023. Concurrently, 1,900 internal migrants were hosted in the assessed communities and 247,753 Tajik nationals were reported to be residing abroad as international migrants. In addition, 121,095 return migrants have returned from abroad.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Snowflake held a two-part hackathon in London in collaboration with University College London (UCL) (6-7 October 2023) and in Nairobi (23-26 October 2023). The hackthons presented a unique opportunity for IOM to enhance key technical processes related to data collation, compilation and analysis, with direct implications for future use of IOM’s mobility data for climate mobility research.

Furthermore, the exercises yielded valuable insights into into the feasibility of using advanced analytics for climate migration research and the critical challenges in harnessing environmental and climate-induced disaster data. Issues such as spatial and temporal coverage limitations, incompatibility and incomparability among climate data sources, data interoperability constraints, and the spatial heterogeneity of climate data were identified.

The findings can shape future research using IOM’s mobility data to contribute to the climate mobility knowledge base and also serve as a catalyst for improving data accessibility, ultimately enhancing the analytic potential of IOM’s mobility data. This aligns with IOM’s core institutional priorities and commitment to contributing to a better understanding of mobility driven by climate change and environmental degradation.

IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix in collaboration with INGD conducted a movement intention survey to 1,062 household hosting 5,010 individuals displaced from Chiure district in Cabo Delgado to Erati district in Nampula province. Conflict and/or fear of attacks due to Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs) in Cabo Delgado was the main trigger of displacement. 95% were displaced from Ocua posto. 52% of the IDPs are female whilst 48% are males. Children consitutes 55% of the IDPs.

The objective of the assessment was to better understand the conditions of the IDP households in the current place of displacement and their short term intentions. 98% of the displaced households arrived in the current locations between 19 and 24 February 2024. 84% intend to stay in the current location for a period longer than one week.
