About Mauritania

DTM is a system of tools and methodologies to track and monitor displacement and population mobility. In Mauritania, DTM has been active since November 2018 to better understand population flows in the country, including of migrants’ presence in Mauritania’s cities and pastoral movements in the Southern regions of the country. In addition, the DTM system has been used in the country to conduct rapid assessment exercises through household surveys following floods in the region of Guidimagha. DTM is operational in Mauritania to gather, analyze and disseminate critical, multi-layered information on the mobility, vulnerabilities and needs of displaced and mobile populations that enables decision-makers and responding partners to provide targeted, context-specific assistance.

In order to facilitate humanitarian interventions, DTM Mauritania works closely with IOM’s other programmes through referring identified populations in need of assistance to colleagues providing direct assistance to the migrant as well as to IOM’s Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme. DTM Mauritania collaborates with its local partner GNAP to track and monitor transhumance movements through IOM’s Transhumance Tracking Tool in order to provide necessary information to programs that support the population involved in transhumance. Furthermore, DTM Mauritania supports other humanitarian partners and local authorities through the provision of updates in the case of sudden population movements caused by floods as well as by facilitating humanitarian rapid assessments, for instance, following floods-induced displacements.
